For Nicholas LaRosa ’20 and Brogan Scotch ’20, their time at Marywood University was more than just an academic experience—it was the foundation for their careers, personal growth, and even their entrepreneurial journey as co-owners of Scotch Sauce LLC, a local hot sauce company based in Scranton, PA. Both alumni took different academic paths, but their shared passion for business and community led them to an exciting venture together.
Nicholas, a business management major, was drawn to Marywood’s strong academic reputation and its close proximity to his family and friends. “I loved the idea of staying local to Scranton, and Marywood supported that desire. The strong course curriculum and welcoming environment made it an easy decision,” he shared.
Brogan, who double-majored in literature and writing, transferred to Marywood after deciding to change majors. “The admissions team went above and beyond to get me in on short notice. That level of dedication and support really stood out to me,” he recalled.
During their time at the university, both Nicholas and Brogan found inspiration from faculty members who helped shape their academic and professional journeys. Nicholas credits Dr. Speicher and Dr. Uldarico Rex Dum Dum for their invaluable mentorship, while Brogan found inspiration in the campus atmosphere and the support of Dr. Brassard, Dr. Kevin McDonough, and Dr. Sadlack.
Beyond the classroom, Nicholas embraced leadership roles in Delta Epsilon Sigma, Delta Mu Delta, and the National Society of Leadership and Success. He emphasized how his experience at Marywood improved his ability to collaborate with others, public speaking skills, and adaptability. “The diverse student body and the numerous presentations I gave throughout my business courses helped me become a better communicator and leader,” he said.
Brogan, meanwhile, found personal growth through exposure to different viewpoints and perspectives, which helped shape his understanding of the world. “Marywood opened me up to a broad range of viewpoints—social, political, religious, and beyond. Absorbing so much helped me grow and define where I stand on these things,” he reflected.
After graduation, both alumni successfully transitioned into their careers. Nicholas works as a Sales Representative at Sherwin-Williams while also co-owning Scotch Sauce LLC. He considers registering his first LLC as his proudest professional accomplishment, attributing much of his business acumen to Marywood’s rigorous business courses. “Dr. Speicher’s Entrepreneur class gave me the confidence and creativity to take the leap in starting our company,” he said.
Brogan’s journey took him into the field of SEO blogging and marketing, which he credits to the education he received at Marywood. “Simply getting a job in my field shortly after graduating was huge. It wouldn’t have been possible without my degree,” he explained. However, his biggest passion remains Scotch Sauce LLC, where he channels his creativity into making high-quality hot sauce. “The business is what gets the bulk of my passion these days,” he added.
Graduating in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, both Nicholas and Brogan witnessed a shift in higher education toward more digital and remote learning opportunities. Nicholas noted, “I believe Marywood has increased their online course support, giving more opportunities for students to obtain degrees remotely.” Similarly, Brogan pointed out that the concept of location has changed significantly in education, saying, “Are there even such things as snow days anymore?”
For current students, Nicholas offers two key pieces of advice: “First, network! Even if it’s just saying hello or exchanging numbers, get involved with your peers. Second, never stop pushing your boundaries. Don’t put a cap on what you believe you’re capable of—stay busy and be present in all you can be.”
Brogan’s advice is simple but powerful: “Even if you don’t know the next step, keep moving forward. A door will open, and more after that. Always give it your all ‘now,’ and you’ll be better off tomorrow.”
As they continue to grow their business and careers, both Nicholas and Brogan remain deeply connected to their Scranton roots and the Marywood community. They take great pride in their entrepreneurial journey and the opportunity to share their passion with others. Whether it’s through local vendor shows, high-quality ingredients, or networking with fellow small businesses, Scotch Sauce LLC represents their dedication and hard work.
For Nicholas and Brogan, their time at Marywood was more than just an education—it was the launching pad for their personal and professional success. Now, they’re excited to see where their journey takes them next.
