JT Burke, a member of the Class of 2028 at Marywood University, is pursuing his dream of becoming a Physician’s Assistant. He describes his decision to attend Marywood as a natural one, driven by the “at-home atmosphere” he felt during his first visit to campus. “When I came to see the university, everyone seemed so welcoming and happy with what they were doing. It made me want to be a part of whatever they were doing,” JT reflects. This sense of belonging has been a constant throughout his time at Marywood.
Although he acknowledges that attending a private university comes with financial challenges, JT is grateful for the financial aid he receives, along with support from other sources. “Marywood is a private institution, making the prices expensive, but this did not draw me away. I thought the positives ultimately outweighed the negatives,” he shares. His commitment to his education has been bolstered by the university’s resources and the welcoming environment that Marywood provides.
During his first year, JT earned a spot on the Dean’s List for his first two semesters and was honored with a Resident Assistant (RA) position on campus. “I was happy with getting the Dean’s List for my first 2 semesters of my freshman year,” he says. “Being selected for the RA position allowed me to meet new people and expand my involvement on campus. I find the more things I join, the more connections I make, and I enjoy meeting all new people.” His leadership and passion for connecting with others have flourished as he has taken on roles like Secretary of the Spikeball Club, as well as participating in several campus organizations such as InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, Psychlete Club, and Intramural basketball.
One of the greatest lessons JT has learned at Marywood is the importance of balance. Reflecting on a recent struggle, he admits, “I have been struggling with taking on too many things at one time. A lesson I think I am learning right now is that it’s fine to take a step back and reevaluate. Think about the things you really enjoy, what is making you happy, and what is making you unhappy. Try to eliminate the things that are bringing you down and do your best.” This growth mindset has allowed him to better manage his time and maintain a healthy balance between academics, extracurriculars, and personal well-being.
JT also credits his increasing campus involvement with empowering him. “I have felt empowered the more involved I get,” he explains. “Leadership plays a big role in empowerment, and the more I feel like I am setting a good example, the more empowered I feel.” Whether it’s through his leadership as an RA or his participation in various clubs, JT is finding his voice as a student leader.
Looking ahead, JT’s aspirations are clear. “I see myself beginning my career as a Physician’s Assistant somewhere that I enjoy being. My dream is to be successful in my career and to be a good provider for my community and my family.” He feels Marywood is helping him get closer to this goal by allowing him to develop important interpersonal and social skills. “Marywood is helping me meet people that improve my social skills and make me look forward to talking to others,” he says.
As he thinks about his future and the role of donors in his educational experience, JT expresses his deep gratitude: “You are the reason for our student success. You are the driving force behind student and faculty success. Each graduate of Marywood that goes on to do something special was at least caused a little bit by you.” He is committed to giving back to Marywood because of the impact it has had on his life. “Marywood has provided me with resources and people that I will cherish for the rest of my life. The least I could do is give back to the program and school that gave so much to me,” he says.
When JT walks across the stage at Commencement, he will undoubtedly feel a deep sense of fulfillment. “I will feel a sense of fulfillment but experience a moment of flashbacks,” he reflects. “Where every person I met through Marywood will run through my brain and I will realize just how much this place really changed my life.”
