A Bachelor of Architectural Engineering degree prepares students to pursue careers as professional engineers focused on building systems and structural design. The program emphasizes advanced structural systems and sustainable building solutions, helping students develop the technical knowledge needed to shape the built environment.
For students exploring architecture vs architectural engineering, the difference largely comes down to focus. Architecture primarily centers on the design, aesthetics, and functionality of buildings, while architectural engineering focuses on the engineering systems that make those designs possible. Architectural engineers apply principles of engineering to elements such as structural systems, environmental performance, and building technology, ensuring that buildings are safe, efficient, and sustainable.
At Marywood University, the Architectural Engineering program plans to apply for accreditation with ABET and is part of a collaborative learning environment similar to many leading architectural engineering schools. Marywood offers an integrative curriculum that includes shared coursework with related undergraduate degree programs: Architecture (BArch), Interior Architecture (BIA), and Construction Management (BSCM). This interdisciplinary approach allows students to gain a broader understanding of how buildings are designed, engineered, and constructed.
Architectural Engineering students follow a scaffolded curriculum designed to prepare them for professional practice. Key elements of the program include:
Design studios that progressively build toward a two-semester comprehensive thesis project
Building technology courses integrating topics such as structural systems, environmental and building science, renewable energy, and sustainable design
Engineering representation courses that introduce building information modeling (BIM) and simulation tools used in the industry
History and theory courses exploring the cultural, philosophical, political, and religious traditions that shape the built environment
Program electives in areas such as community design-build projects, global urban ecologies, lighting design, and public design initiatives
Through this combination of design, engineering, and interdisciplinary collaboration, students gain the knowledge and experience expected from today’s leading architectural engineering schools, preparing them to contribute to innovative and sustainable building solutions.
Design your Future Program is designed with the desire of an immersive experience, engaging students in several demonstrations anchored to the Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Construction Management Programs.
Marywood’s LEED Gold-certified School of Architecture building includes features like geothermal cooling, rainwater harvesting, and a green roof—putting sustainable principles into practice every day. Our students collaborate across disciplines with peers in Architecture, Construction Management, Interior Architecture, and Virtual Architecture, gaining real-world perspectives from the start. Through the Center for Urban Studies, they also engage in projects that connect design with community.
Recent awards include:
First Prize – Solar Decathlon Design Challenge, Attached Housing Division (2021)
Second Prize – Solar Decathlon Design Challenge, Retrofit Housing Division (2023)
Third Place – Workplace Wellness Category, AISC/ACSA Steel Competition (2021)
Marywood’s Architecture program is ranked #14 Best Value School by U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges rankings for 2026, making Marywood a great, centrally located option for students in Northeastern Pennsylvania who want to stay closer to home.
