Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood and Elementary Education/Special Ed (BS)

Prepare for a Rewarding Teaching Career with a Early Childhood and Special Education Degree

Marywood's Early Childhood and Special Education program prepares you for the challenges and rewards of teaching persons with exceptional learning needs at all levels of development from birth to age 21. Your coursework in professional studies and liberal arts—taught in small classes and enhanced with real-world experience beginning in your first year—will emphasize creative thinking, the evaluation of contemporary educational issues, and development of leadership skills.

The faculty will consider you a professional colleague as well as a student: teacher candidates are required to maintain professional membership in the Council for Exceptional Children. You'll graduate prepared to be a leader in the areas of intellectual disability, behavior disorders, learning disabilities, and multiple disabilities; you'll be ready to serve as a teacher in grades K through 12 in a school or residential setting, as a professional in adult services, or in another position of responsibility in this growing field.

  • Dual certification in early childhood and elementary education and special education
  • Field experience starts during first year

Field experience begins in the first year and culminates with the student teaching experience. Students have the opportunity to work in a variety of settings including early intervention programs, home-based programs, preschool/child care programs, and elementary (K-4) classrooms in urban, rural, and suburban locations.

The Child Care Center, on campus, serves children from infancy through Pre-Kindergarten and can be used for field experience by students in the EC&E program.

Students may also elect to enroll in a dual certification program. These lead to teacher certification in Special Education PK-12 and Grades PK-4.

In order to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood and Elementary Education, students must complete all required liberal arts and major courses, with a minimum GPA of 3.00 overall. Additionally, they must undertake student teaching experiences. Student teaching is evaluated as satisfactory/unsatisfactory. In order to graduate, students must earn a satisfactory grade in both placements.
