Marywood University President Lisa A. Lori recently served as Chief Guest and Commencement Speaker at the graduation ceremony of the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA), based in Nairobi, Kenya, which serves more than 7,000 students from across Eastern Africa, including countries such as Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Malawi, and Zambia.
In addition to the graduation ceremony, the visit highlighted Marywood’s partnership with CUEA through the Higher Education for Sisters in Africa (HESA) program, an initiative of the African Sisters Education Collaborative (ASEC) that expands access to higher education for Catholic sisters in Africa. President Lori serves as Vice Chair of ASEC’s Board of Directors.
Addressing 3,200 graduates during CUEA’s 45th Graduation Ceremony at the Langata Main Campus on Friday, October 23, President Lori spoke about the power, promise, and responsibility of earning a degree from a Catholic university.
“As Catholic universities, more is asked of us,” said President Lori. “We are called to put our knowledge at the service of humanity, to see the person behind the problem, to listen before we act, to recognize the dignity of every human being, and to understand that our talents, our education, and our opportunities are gifts that carry responsibilities.”
She further encouraged the graduates, “Build careers. Start businesses. Pursue research. Lead schools, hospitals, governments, parishes, communities, and organizations. Make discoveries. Earn a good living. Support your families. Go out and do extraordinary things. But as you rise, ask yourself: Who might rise with me?”
Marywood’s partnership with CUEA and ASEC reflects a shared commitment to expanding access to education and supporting learning opportunities that reach across borders. While in Kenya, President Lori also visited Precious Blood Girls Secondary School in Juja Farm to speak with students about educational opportunities.
