The Marywood University Orchestra Offers Free Concert

Under the direction of Dr. Nathaniel F. Parker, the Marywood University Orchestra will present a concert on Sunday, March 14, at 4 p.m. in Marywood University's Sette LaVerghetta Center for Performing Arts Auditorium. The concert is free and open to the public.

Women’s soccer players Andrea Barker and Meghan Coyle, along with men’s lacrosse player George Downey IV, were among 408 student-athletes picked from all three divisions of the NCAA to attend this year’s conference.

The Marywood Players, a student run organization in the Marywood University Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance, will present Twisted Theatre: a Reversed Revue directed by Elizabeth Smith and produced by Victoria Moshy on Friday March 12, at 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. The production will be performed in the Black Box Theatre, Sette LaVerghetta Center for Performing Arts. The event is free and open to the public. (Donations will be accepted for Boadway Cares.)

Marywood University's women's basketball team will host Immaculata University in the first round of the Colonial State Athletic Conference playoffs on Tuesday evening. The game between third-seeded Pacers and sixth-seeded Mighty Macs will tip-off at 7:00 p.m. in Marywood's Insalaco Arena.

Environmental artist Jackie Brookner will offer an illustrated lecture about her work at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 24 in the Learning Resources Center, Room 160. Her lecture is part of the Fresh Perspectives-New Solutions: Visiting Environmental Artist Series.

National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association Chapter Receives Grant

The Marywood University Chapter of the National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association (NSSLHA) was awarded a $700.00 community service grant from the NSSLHA Executive Council in fall 2009. The grant was used to support an educational project for Head Start, a Scranton Lackawanna Human Development Agency (SLHDA).

Free Concert to Benefit Campus Ministry- Jan. 30

Marywood University's Office of Campus Ministry will host The Forgiven Band, a local Christian rock band, to help raise donations for upcoming Campus Ministry sponsored service trips. The Forgiven Band will play on Saturday, January 30, from 8- 10 p.m. in the Latour Room, Nazareth Student Center. The concert is free and open to the public.

Prayer Vigil for Victims of Haiti Earthquake- Jan. 20

Marywood University will hold a Prayer Vigil for Haiti on Wednesday, January 20 at 9 p. m. in the Rotunda, Liberal Arts Building.

String Project Wins National Award

The Marywood University String Project, under the direction of Sophie Till, won the American String Teachers Association (ASTA) String Project of the Year Award.

School of Social Work Announces Spring-Start 2010 MSW Program

Marywood University announces their School of Social Work Spring Start 2010 MSW Program, which provides a Tuesday and Thursday weeknight course for students who missed the start of their Fall 2009 MSW Cohort. This innovative program has been designed to serve prospective students who have not studied in the social work discipline during their undergraduate careers and who seek to further their career or make a career change. Typical interested individuals might be currently working in or may have recently been employed in social work, human services, health care, palliative and hospice care, criminal justice, or may have recently completed military service.

New Forms for PA Dept of Ed Certification

The Pennsylvania Department of Education has released revised versions of the PDE 338G (General Application) and 338C (College/University Verification) forms. As of September 1, 2009, only the version dated 10/08 will be accepted; applications submitted on old forms will be returned.

There is an Employment Fair for all students and alumni looking for jobs or internships! Tuesday, March 24th from 1 - 4:30 at Wachovia Arena. Bus transportation available from Marywood.

Pacers Women to Host First Round CSAS Tuesday

Wheelchair Basketball Game Set to Benefit St. Joseph's Center- Oct. 24

Marywood University will be hosting the second annual Wheelchair Basketball event on Saturday, October 24, in the Robert J. Mellow Center for Athletics and Wellness. Marywood University's Men's and Women's Pacer basketball teams will play against the Allied Forces wheelchair basketball team from Allied Rehabilitation Services.

Women's Soccer Team First to Play on New Field

Marywood University's new synthetic turf multi-purpose field will host its inaugural collegiate game on Tuesday, September 1, at 4 p.m. as the defending CSAC women's soccer champions. Marywood University Pacers take on Wilkes University's squad in a non-conference action.

Professional Exchange Program Seeks Host Families

Marywood University's Professional International Exchange Program (MPIX) will welcome three female international professionals as part of a four-month exchange program this fall. MPIX, under the Council of International Programs USA, brings well qualified professionals to the United States for practical training experiences. The program is now seeking families to host exchange participants from Germany and Turkey for a four-week period. Either single individuals or families may take advantage of this hosting opportunity.

Professor Mary Salvaterra Publishes Work on Women Religious in Africa

Mary Salvaterra, CSJ, Ph.D., Professor in Education, co-authored Developing Leaders Among Women Religious in Africa in A. W. Wiseman (Ed.), Educational leadership: Global contexts and international comparisons (pp. 245-271). UK: Emerald Press. The work describes studies completed through the Sisters Leadership Development Initiative (SLDI) designed to develop leadership skills in 304 women religious of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ghana and Nigeria.

Student Exhibit: Furniture Forms on Display at Lavish

The exhibition, Furniture Forms, will be featured at Lavish in downtown Scranton during the month of February. The exhibition of works by Marywood students will showcase some of the best work created by art students of the region in recent years. All work was designed and created by students enrolled in Marywood University's Three Dimensional Design advanced class during the 2009 fall term.

Rev. Walter Everett and Michael Carlucci, the man who murdered Rev. Everett's son, will be speaking in the Latour Room at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 11. Rev. Everett and Michael tell a most remarkable story of human development, from a loss of faith and a desire for retribution to forgiveness and redemption. The event is free and open to the public.

WVIA-FM to Use Marywood's 91.7 FM Frequency Temporarily

Marywood University came to the aid of public broadcaster WVIA 89.9 FM over the weekend when the regional PBS broadcaster's transmitter building burned in an electrical fire on Friday. Marywood's Director of Broadcast Operations, Ernie Mengoni, immediately responded to the PBS broadcaster's troubles by offering the use of the University's broadcast signal, WVMW 91.7 FM, for several hours each day until WVIA can re-organize their radio transmission.

Dr. Alan Levine Named Dean of the College of Health and Human Services

Alan M. Levine, Ph.D. has been named Dean of the College of Health and Human Services, where he will be responsible for providing strategic, entrepreneurial, and visual leadership. He will demonstrate and foster excellence in teaching, research, and service. Prior to his position, Dr. Levin acted as interim Dean of the College of Health and Human Services, Professor and Director of the Doctoral Program in Human Development, and Professor and Co-Chair in the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics. In addition, he acted as Deputy Director of Research for the former Military Family Institute at Marywood University.

On September 1, 2009, Northeast Pennsylvania's first Architecture students stood in awe, and then scattered to take hundreds of cell phone photos, mingle with their new classmates, and then listen attentively this afternoon as they witnessed what everyone had been waiting more than a year for-the opening of the first academic year for the new Center for Architectural Studies, the spacious learning lab of "green" architecture that will be the academic home for the next four to six years for these future environmental stewards.

Sr. Anne Munley, IHM, Marywood University President, and Gregory Keane Hunt, FAIA, School of Architecture Dean, hosted a “Celebration of the Constructors” at the new Center—an event that honored and thanked the many laborers and craftsmen whose collective skills and talents helped to create this special “green architecture” facility..

Marywood University will celebrate its 91st annual commencement with the awarding of 881 degrees to graduates from the Reap College of Education and Human Development, Insalaco College of Creative Arts and Management, College of Health and Human Services, and College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The ceremony will be held on Sunday, May 10 at 1 p.m. at the Wachovia Arena, Casey Plaza in Wilkes-Barre.
