At the Marywood University School of Architecture, our mission is to educate undergraduate and graduate students in built environment disciplines who engage the world passionately and intelligently. As a professional school that values the liberal arts, our programs set a rigorous studio-based curriculum within an educational environment that encourages critical thinking, collaboration, and speculation.

Facilities & Technology

Our programs are housed in an innovative LEED-certified facility that was once the University’s gymnasium and natatorium. In-house, we have a digital fabrication lab, wood, and metal fabrication shops, and advanced computer and plotting labs.

Center for Architectural Studies

In some cases, where students learn can be as important as what they learn. Where it can be a modern urban center or a historic city like Florence, or it can be a building so innovative in its design that it becomes a partner in the educational experience. Such is the case with Marywood’s Center for Architectural Studies, which houses the School of Architecture.

The School of Architecture is a state-of-the-art example of sustainable design. It's a spacious, adaptive re-use of Marywood's former gymnasium and natatorium. It features:

Two levels of open studios
Wood and metal shops
Digital Fabrication Lab
Plaster-casting room
Printers and plotters
Construction Materials Lab
Reference library

A two-story commons under a continuous skylight harvests abundant natural light throughout the day and serves as the building's "agora" - an open, shared, central space for educational exchanges among students and faculty. This is an ideal place for group discussions, debates, displays, and project critiques.

Every student is provided an individual work space with a drawing board, personal storage area, pin-up wall, and space for a laptop.

Cloud Room

The Cloud Room (CAS 251) is located on the second level of the Center for Architectural Studies, above the lobby. Including only chairs without desks, it is not considered a traditional classroom space. The Cloud Room is used by the School of Architecture as a meeting space and as a location for architecture lectures and guest speakers.

Architecture is more than a profession — it's a community. At Marywood, students can join collective and discipline-specific student organizations that foster leadership, creativity, and professional development. Clubs and honor societies support students across all architecture programs, including:

American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS)
Center for Living City Student Chapter (CLCS)
International Interior Design Association (IIDA)
National Organization of Minority Architecture Students (NOMAS)
Tau Sigma Delta, Upsilon Alpha Chapter (Honor Society)

Joining a club is a great way to network, gain real-world insights, and build your resume as you pursue your architecture degree.

Student Resources

Architecture Kit

Students in Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Virtual Architecture are required to purchase an Architecture Kit containing essential tools for studio courses. These kits may be ordered through the Marywood Gear Shop, and students should direct any questions to interim Director Jodi La Coe.

Laptop Requirement

To support success in our architecture programs, all incoming students in Architecture, Interior Architecture, Virtual Architecture, and Construction Management are required to bring a laptop that meets our minimum hardware specifications. These systems are selected for compatibility with architecture software and to align with the PC-based platforms used throughout campus and the design industry.

Minimum specs:

3.0 GHz multi-core CPU
16 GB RAM
512 GB SSD
6 GB video card

Preferred specs:

3.5 GHz multi-core CPU
32 GB RAM
1 TB SSD
8 GB video card

Optional laptops that meet or exceed these specs may also be ordered through the Marywood Gear Shop.

Travel Opportunities

Study abroad is a key part of the educational experience in many of our architecture degree programs. Students in the Bachelor of Architecture and Bachelor of Interior Architecture programs are required to spend one semester abroad during their third year at ISI Florence—a premier institution for architecture education in Italy.

Construction Management and Virtual Architecture students also have access to a wide range of global learning opportunities. Study abroad experiences broaden students’ understanding of architecture across cultures, geographies, and building traditions.

If you are unable to participate in a required study abroad program, contact interim Director Jodi La Coe for exemption options and alternate experiences.

Architecture Licensure

Students enrolled in Marywood’s NAAB-accredited Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) program can begin preparing for professional licensure from day one. We provide step-by-step guidance on:

Establishing your NCARB Record
Completing the Architectural Experience Program (AXP)
Preparing for the Architect Registration Examination (ARE)
Navigating state-specific registration processes

Our NCARB Licensing Advisor, Elizabeth Andrzejewski, supports students throughout their path to becoming licensed architects.

Interior Architecture Certification

Students pursuing the Bachelor or Master of Interior Architecture can qualify for the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) certification. Our program provides the necessary educational foundation, and our NCIDQ campus coordinator, Jim Sullivan, helps students establish their accounts and prepare for certification exams.

Construction Management Certification

Students in the Bachelor of Science in Construction Management (BSCM) program are guided through the process of becoming Certified Construction Managers (CCM). Certification is administered by the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) and requires a combination of an accredited architecture, engineering, or construction degree, experience hours, and successful completion of exams.

Virtual Architecture

There is no formal licensure required for careers in Film and Game Environment Design, which are the focus of our Bachelor of Virtual Architecture (BVA) program. However, students gain real-world preparation through access to top-tier faculty, portfolio development, and professional network connections.
