Meet the Needs of Autistic Students with an Accelerated Online Autism Spectrum Disorder Endorsement

Marywood’s accelerated, online autism spectrum disorder (ASD) endorsement provides educators, school psychologists, counselors, and other professionals with the skills they need to meet the educational needs of students with ASD.

Our 12-credit program, which is approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, can be completed in just two semesters. All classes are online, making them convenient for working professionals. Coursework is supplemented by 80 hours of field experience that allow students to work directly with children with ASD. If you are a teacher or school administrator, you can typically complete your field work within your own school district.

Communications teachers help students bring meaning to their experiences and the experiences of others through the use of language and all those behaviors, verbal and nonverbal, associated with the usage of language. The primary component of theater – dialogue – provides a uniquely effective method for studying the communicative functions of human language. The certification area includes: English, theater, and non-print media.

Our communications certification program provides professional theater and communication techniques training and pedagogical instruction to prepare you to work in secondary school settings. This certification allows you to teach English language arts, theater, speech/public speaking, journalism, and non-print media in grades 7-12.

Teacher certification requires a minimum GPA of 3.0, completion of field and student teaching experiences, and passing of PRAXIS tests.

Marywood's school counseling program prepares students to become professional PK-12 school counselors, who are certified/licensed educators with a minimum of a master's degree in school counseling, making them uniquely qualified to address all students' academic, career and personal/social development needs by designing, implementing, and evaluating a comprehensive school counseling program that promotes and enhances student success. Professional school counselors serve a vital role in maximizing student success. Through leadership, advocacy and collaboration, professional school counselors promote equity and access to a quality education and post-secondary options. They work with students individually, in small groups, and through classroom lessons. They collaborate with teachers, parents/guardians, and administrators. 

A Master of Science degree in School Counseling provides skills and expertise in individual and group counseling, educational planning, and career development. It is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) and meets the Pennsylvania Department of Education's requirements for PK-12 school counseling certification. We rely heavily on one-to-one interactions between students and faculty mentors. A professor will periodically review your progress and help you reach your educational goals.

Extensive Fieldwork Experience

Students in our school counseling program complete a 600-hour supervised internship in a real-world counseling setting [300-hours elementary (PK-8) and 300-hours secondary (9-12)]. You can choose the school(s) at which you would like to complete your fieldwork experience, and this invaluable, hands-on experience allows you to put into practice skills and knowledge learned in the classroom.

Upon degree completion, graduates:

  • Can apply for dual (PK-12) school counseling certification in Pennsylvania.
  • Possess all of the educational requirements for counseling licensure (LPC) in Pennsylvania.
  • Are able to apply for any master’s level counseling position, even if it is not within a school.

  • Nine credit hours of course work that give candidates an understanding of foundation of education, of human development and the psychology of the teaching/ learning process.

    The Social Sciences Department offers you both a solid academic background and rigorous preparation to help you succeed as a history or social studies teacher, including a focused curriculum that features in-depth courses history, social sciences, and education.

    Home and School Visitors (HSV) are licensed and certified professionals who provide professional social work services in a variety of K-12 educational institutions to students, families, schools, and the community.

    • Provide professional social work services in educational institutions
    • Three tracks to certification offered:
    1. Post-MSW-HSV Certification: Requires a Master of Social Work Degree (MSW) from a CSWE-accredited School of Social Work. All Home and School Visitor post-MSW candidates complete a minimum of 360 hours in a school-based field placement which can be the applicants current position as a School Social worker, Crisis Counselor, Emergency HSV, etc.
    2. HSV Certification Only: All Home and School Visitor ONLY candidates complete a minimum of 440 hours in a school-based field placement, supervised by a Certified Home and School Visitor who completes a role competency evaluation of the candidates demonstrated skills.

    Online Instruction Endorsement

    Enhance Your Teaching Portfolio with an Online Instruction Endorsement

    Due to the increase in online and blended learning in PK-12 settings, it is imperative for current and future teachers to be prepared to teach in an online environment. The program will be of interest to current graduate education students and PK-12 teachers. Currently, teaching jobs that include an online teaching component do not require a special certification, however, that requirement may be put in place in the very near future. Current undergraduate students will also have the opportunity to take these courses and apply for the endorsement after receiving their undergraduate education degree. 

    The Online Teaching Endorsement program is a 12-credit program that includes four, 8-week accelerated courses designed for candidates who have completed a bachelor's program and are interested in obtaining professional knowledge, skills, and competencies to teach in an online environment

    The program is accredited through the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) and includes a 10-hour field experience component for students to take the knowledge that they receive and apply it to hands-on practice in the field.

    Increase your knowledge of reading instruction, diagnosis, and remediation of reading problems, and learn new research-based strategies that will help you teach readers of any age in a K-12 setting.     This degree program provides opportunities for the development of the administrative and interpersonal skills needed by practicing and future leaders in education. It is built on the assumption that the public and non-public school environments are unique. For this reason, courses and other learning experiences are deeply grounded in those principles of public and non-public thought and practice.     The Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) Program in School Psychology is interdisciplinary in nature and is intended for students who seek state certification as a PreK-12 school psychologist. The Ed.S. degree program is designed as a 75-credit graduate program for students who wish to work in schools or related agencies. The program is competency-based and aims to train professionals in a scientist-practitioner model to provide the wide range of services expected of school psychologists.     The Ed.S. degree program is fully approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education and follows guidelines for School Psychology training, as set forth by the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) and Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) standards.

    Students may enter the program post-baccalaureate or post-master’s degree. Those seeking entrance post-baccalaureate earn a Master of Arts degree in Psychology upon completion of 48 credit hours and other degree requirements for the General/Theoretical concentration. Applicants seeking admission post-master’s degree should expect to complete a minimum of 30 graduate credits, including a 1,200-hour internship, within three academic years. Part-time students, entering post-baccalaureate, are expected to complete the program and internship within five years.

    Marywood University's MAT/PK-4 Certification Program is right for you. The Master of Arts in Teaching/PK-4 program is designed for students who already hold a bachelor's degree in another field and wish to enter the teaching professional with an initial certification in Early Childhood & Elementary Education and an MAT degree. This program consists of a minimum of 49 hours of graduate work. Students with no education courses may need to take up to 60 semester hours. The courses are divided into four categories:

    • Twenty-four semester hours in professional education courses which are intended to give the student an understanding of foundations of education, special needs youngsters, human growth and development, and the psychology of the teaching/learning process.
    • Twenty-five hours in specialty area courses which provide an understanding of the curriculum taught at the elementary school level.
    • Eight hours in practicum and student teaching, and
    • Six hours in core Master's courses, providing the student the opportunity to integrate theory and practice in both research and learning theory.
