Marywood University's APA-accredited* Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology (Psy.D.) prepares students to provide evidence-based and culturally-sensitive clinical services to diverse populations. Students develop competencies in nine areas, including: research, ethical and legal standards, individual and cultural diversity, professional values and attitudes, communication and interpersonal skills, assessment, intervention, supervision, and consultation and interprofessional/interdisciplinary skills.

Program Aims

  • To provide students with foundational knowledge of the field of psychology in general and clinical psychology in particular.
  • To help students advance from novice to the early stages of competent clinician status in: research; ethics; individual and cultural diversity; professional values, attitudes, and behaviors; communication and interpersonal skills; assessment; intervention; supervision; and, consultation and interprofessional/interpersonal skills.
  • To teach students to view themselves as being life-long learners while also giving them the skills necessary to be critical and sophisticated consumers of research so that they may be able to independently and effectively apply future developments in the field to clinical practice.

Program Graduates

Graduates of Marywood's Psy.D. program are employed across a wide variety of settings. The majority of our students have their own independent practice or are employed in medical centers, typically within the VA system, university counseling centers, or community mental health centers. Other settings include correctional facilities/forensics, psychiatric facilities, military, and academia.The clinical psychology doctoral program at Marywood endeavors to train high quality students to provide state-of-the-art, ethical, humane and culturally sensitive clinical services to diverse populations in contemporary society. On the way to earning a Psy.D. in clinical psychology, the program model teaches students to be research-informed practitioners with general skills who pursue development in specific areas through the selection of electives, practicum sites, research topics, internships and post-doctoral training.

Pursue a Fulfilling Health Career with a Communication Sciences and Disorders Degree

At Marywood, we are focused on preparing you for a career as a speech-language pathologist. Certification in this field requires a master’s degree, so our program prepares you to become a certified practitioner by earning both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in five years.

A bachelor’s degree-only option is available for those pursuing careers in audiology.

Our active, hands-on program offers extensive clinical practicum experiences, as students work with patients in our on-campus clinic, in outside professional settings, and through numerous community outreach efforts. Accredited by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), the CSD program provides a challenging academic curriculum to prepare students, from a family-centered perspective, for professional careers serving children and adults with communication disorders.

The undergraduate (pre-professional phase) portion of the program includes Marywood University’s core curriculum and all of the pre-professional courses that emphasize knowledge of basic human communication and swallowing processes.  

The graduate (professional phase) portion of the program, which begins with the summer semester of the third undergraduate year, emphasizes academic coursework and clinical practicum experiences designed to foster knowledge and skills about the nature of speech, language, hearing and communication disorders and differences as well as swallowing disorders.

Enhance Your Teaching Portfolio with an Online Instruction Endorsement

Due to the increase in online and blended learning in PK-12 settings, it is imperative for current and future teachers to be prepared to teach in an online environment. The program will be of interest to current graduate education students and PK-12 teachers. Currently, teaching jobs that include an online teaching component do not require a special certification, however, that requirement may be put in place in the very near future. Current undergraduate students will also have the opportunity to take these courses and apply for the endorsement after receiving their undergraduate education degree. 

The Online Teaching Endorsement program is a 12-credit program that includes four, 8-week accelerated courses designed for candidates who have completed a bachelor's program and are interested in obtaining professional knowledge, skills, and competencies to teach in an online environment

The program is accredited through the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) and includes a 10-hour field experience component for students to take the knowledge that they receive and apply it to hands-on practice in the field.

The faculty of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders is dedicated to providing students with a quality education and opportunities to integrate theory and research into clinical practice.

Degree Tracks

Five-year Program

Bachelor of Science (B.S.) Degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders and Master of Science (M.S.) Degree in Speech-Language Pathology.

This program allows students to earn both a bachelor's and a master's degree by designing an academic and clinical curriculum sequence that extends across five years.

This five-year program provides a rigorous, intensive curriculum sequence tailored to students who are focused on their educational achievements and who are goal oriented. Students who do not meet the academic requirements to transition to the professional (graduate) phase of the program will complete only the pre-professional (undergraduate) phase and earn a bachelor of science degree at the end of their fourth year.

Two-Year (Five Semesters) Master's Program

Master of Science (M.S.) Degree in Speech-Language Pathology  

This two-year graduate-level program is offered to qualified individuals with a bachelor's degree. There is limited availability for admission to this program. Students with an out-of-field undergraduate degree can be provisionally admitted to the master’s program, however, they must successfully complete a year of CSD pre-requisite (undergraduate level) coursework prior to starting the two-year graduate level program.

The graduate program provides a structured sequence of rigorous academic courses and clinical practicum experiences that prepare students for entry-level practice in the field of speech-language pathology. Individuals with such a background and earned graduate degree often pursue careers in various work settings such as schools, hospitals, nursing homes, and private practice.
