Sr. Nancy Hawkins’ first affiliation with Marywood came as a student. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in French for Secondary Education at Marywood. Her dedication to education followed her throughout her ministerial career as an IHM Sister and she taught French and religion on the high school level for 15 years. Her Masters and Doctoral studies centered on the field of Systematic Theology. She taught undergraduate theology at Fordham University and taught at St. Bernard’s Graduate School of Theology and Ministry for 21 years.
Sr. Nancy joined Marywood’s teaching staff in August of 2021 and was pleased to find her journey had come full circle, now teaching theology at her alma mater.
Sr. Nancy’s dedication to her craft is the result of an innate love of teaching. Her father was a teacher and she was sure at the age of 7 years old that she would become a teacher one day. Such being the case, she is happiest in her classroom, surrounded by her students. Her favorite part of teaching is having the opportunity to create a community of learning where her students can embrace new ideas and life experiences.
The center of her theological writing and research is focused on the life and work of the German Political Theologian, Dorothee Soelle and how her theology of God is impacted by her understanding of suffering, feminism and mysticism. Sr. Nancy, herself is drawn to the study of the theology of suffering which is a doctrine of God issue. She has also written on the theology and spirituality of the void.
