Music Education Major and Violinist Inspired by Music Education Parents

Emily Felker, a senior music education major with a concentration in violin performance, was practically born into her major. As a result of her parents being both music teachers and her role models, Emily began playing violin at an early age.

Emily was drawn to Marywood, primarily because of its faculty, but also because of the overall welcoming nature of the university and the more individualized attention she receives as a result of Marywood’s small size. While Emily auditioned for two schools, the faculty at Marywood stood out.

Emily said, “The teachers stood out to me at Marywood. Meeting with Sophie Till, associate professor of violin and viola, was the deciding factor in choosing Marywood. Faculty absolutely play a key role in the final decision process.”

During Emily’s first two years at Marywood she lived on campus and enjoyed that experience, but is also enjoying living in off-campus housing. She plays in ensembles, but admits that her favorite memories have been created as a result of playing in the Wyoming Seminary Civic Orchestra, as it consists of a mix of college students, professionals, and Wyoming Seminary students.

Enjoying the close-knit university community at Marywood adds to the confidence that Emily has achieved. She is a member of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), where she helps organize the festivals and charity events. Additionally, she takes pleasure working with younger children and hopes to pursue a general music or string position post-graduation.

Emily said, “I love seeing students being more confident in their abilities. When students are able to walk away, and they’re able to do something new—that’s what it’s all about.”

Looking forward to her senior recital, Emily acknowledges that while she is more confident in her abilities, she’s definitely nervous, similar to the way she was for her junior recital. Admittedly, a shy and introverted person prior to attending Marywood, Emily said, “As a result of my experiences and knowledge gained at Marywood, I have definitely come out of my shell.”
