File a Complete Admissions Application
It is fully expected that each prospective student who is a scholarship applicant will have a complete admissions application on file with the Office of Graduate Admissions by February 15, 2023. The admissions application provides the supporting documentation necessary to evaluate a scholarship application. Acceptance into a graduate program is required in order to receive scholarship funds.

If you declare full program participation on the scholarship application, you are expected to enroll in a minimum of nine credits in each of the fall 2023 and spring 2024 semesters. In the event that your program defines full-time enrollment as greater than nine credits, and you are awarded a full participation scholarship, you are expected to maintain a full-time credit load as defined by your department. Full participation students who fail to maintain a full-time credit load will have their scholarship reduced for the semester(s) in question.
If you declare partial program participation on the scholarship application, you are expected to maintain a minimum of six credits in each of the fall 2023 and spring 2024 semesters. Partial program participation scholarship recipients who fail to meet this requirement in any given semester will have their scholarship rescinded.
All scholarship recipients are expected to have and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Scholarship Essay Requirements
Please type an essay (300-500 words) clarifying the relationship between your life-goals and graduate education at Marywood. Your essay will also be judged on depth of expression and proper use of the English language. Your essay must clearly address the following areas:
- Describe your professional work background and experience.
- Describe your community leadership activities. Indicate if a volunteer activity.
- Describe any commendations and appreciation awards, as well as undergraduate and graduate academic awards and honors, you have received.
- Describe any special projects, demonstrations, workshops, recitals, exhibits, or whatever may be appropriate
toyour area to indicate your abilities and interests.
- What are your short- and long-range career goals and objectives?
- What attracted you to your Marywood program as a vehicle for achieving your goals?

Students will be notified of the scholarship selection results in April 2023. Scholarships may only be used to cover graduate tuition costs for the fall and spring semesters. Scholarships may not be used for summer enrollment.
Students awarded graduate assistantships for the 2023-2024 academic year and who accept those positions are not eligible to receive scholarship awards as well.

Graduate students must be enrolled as matriculated students in a participating program in order to receive Marywood University scholarship funding. Endorsement programs, Educational Leadership certifications, English as a Second Language, and enrichment classes are not eligible for
Graduate students who are awarded a Graduate Assistantship are not eligible for a Marywood University scholarship during the same semester or academic year. Students who will benefit from any other form of tuition remission such as, but not limited to, the Marywood Diocesan Scholarship or Personnel Tuition Benefit, may not receive a Marywood University graduate scholarship during that same academic year.
If a graduate scholarship recipient should need to withdraw from courses before the completion of a semester of study, Marywood University will recover institutional funds from the student in proportion to the percentage of tuition refunded for that semester. If the student decides to return to his or her studies in the future, he or she will be required to reapply for a scholarship.
Recipients of a Marywood University graduate scholarship will be notified each year starting in mid- to late April, immediately preceding the academic year for which the scholarship is intended. Marywood graduate scholarships may only be used towards the cost of tuition, and students are encouraged to consider the Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan if financial aid is needed for other educational costs such as books, supplies, and housing. Marywood graduate scholarships are for use during the fall and spring semesters and are not applicable for summer
The graduate admission application serves as the scholarship application for prospective students for the master's level Counseling Degree Programs, and the master's level Psychology Degree Programs at Marywood University. Prospective students should adhere closely to the admissions application deadline published by University Admissions Office to receive scholarship consideration.
The Counseling and Psychology Department faculty will determine the scholarship eligibility of each prospective graduate student based on the materials submitted in the complete admissions application. The primary criterion that will determine scholarship eligibility will be the cumulative undergraduate GPA.
High participation and low participation merit scholarships will be available. The high participation level scholarships will require students to matriculate in 9 or more credits each fall and spring semester. The low participation level scholarships will require students to matriculate in 6 or more credits each fall and spring semester. Students who fail to maintain their required credit load will have their scholarships reduced for the semester(s) in question.
Scholarships are renewable each academic year if students remain in good academic standing.

The graduate admission application serves as the scholarship application for prospective doctoral students of the Clinical Psychology Program. The departmental academic progress file serves as the scholarship application for current doctoral students in the Clinical Psychology Program. There are no other documentation obligations for scholarship consideration for prospective and current doctoral students of the Clinical Psychology Program.
Prospective doctoral students of the Clinical Psychology Program should adhere closely to the graduate admission application deadline. Scholarship notification letters will be mailed electronically in May to both prospective and current doctoral students of the Clinical Psychology Program.
The Schierling Grant: Excellence in Global Education and
International Field Experience for the MSW students
The purpose of the Schierling Grant is to enable MSW students to understand global interconnectedness as a central aspect of their work and have an appreciation of the international perspective, an understanding of global events and influences, and a sense of how global and local events affect populations and culture through an experience of international field education.
Benefits: The Schierling grant annually provides $ 15,000 to sponsor international airfare and four weeks of room and board. The same MSW students’ and faculty member’s airfare and conference registration fees will be supported, if their papers are accepted for presentation at an international conference.
In addition, participating students will receive field practicum hours. Through the Schierling grant, in May, 2018, four MSW students and an MSW faculty member went to Kenya for four weeks and in May, 2019, five MSW students and an MSW faculty member went to Romania for four weeks. The 2022 International Field Experience in Romania is already determined.

Mrs. Angela Marie Hyo Jae Ryoo-Kim Memorial Scholarship
A brief biography of Mrs. Angela Marie Hyo Jae Ryoo-Kim:
It is a distinct honor and privilege to share the legacy of Mrs. Angela Marie Hyo Jae Ryoo-Kim who lived her life according to four principles: faith in God, love of family, the value of education, and service to others. Mrs. Ryoo-Kim married Mr. Joseph Man Hung Kim and they had six children, 3 boy sand 3 girls. Both Mr. and Mrs. Kim were born in North Korea and they fled from the NorthKorean Communist regime to South Korea in the early 1950s. Their plan was to escape for a few days and then return to their home for good. However, their few days became a permanent separation from the rest of their family members. Because, in July 1953, the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) was created and the North Korean Communist regime closed the border between North and South Korea which is still in effect today.
Mr. and Mrs. Kim’s unplanned resettlement in South Korea was not an easy transition. They lost their two oldest children (a daughter and son) and they were forced to accept their separation from the rest of their family in North Korea.
Mrs. Ryoo-Kim used to say “in spite of the hard life circumstance, we (her husband and she) were determined to start all over and believed that with the providential care of God, we will rewrite our story for the sake of our children.”
Their faith, steadfast spirit and life principles certainly paved a new pathway for their off-spring in South Korea and the United States. Mrs. Ryoo-Kim was an avid reader and a life-long learner. She attended her church sponsored senior programs, took English and health care classes, and participated in arts and crafts and senior yoga classes. Her other joy was traveling with her family and friends. She believed in the importance of education and encouraged and empowered all her children and grandchildren to attain higher education. She emphasized what education can do for an individual and how education can be a tool to make a difference for the common good. She ensured her children were well educated and became contributing members of society. Another guiding principle of Mrs. Ryoo-Kim was her faith in God. She read the entire bible three times, participated in bible study, actively attended Mass and faithfully prayed for the people who were on her prayer list. God was the core of her being and her family was the center of her life.

Apply for a Graduate Assistantship
NOTE: All students interested in applying for a Graduate Assistantship listed should read the Conditions of Appointment for Graduate Assistantships and Application Process prior to submitting an application.
Once job descriptions and required skills have been posted, the application process opens in February each year.
Assistantships will be in effect for the 2023-2024 academic year, commencing with the first day of the fall semester and terminating the last day of the spring semester.
Students awarded full-time or part-time graduate assistantships will register for and complete a minimum of 6 graduate credits each semester and must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on studentaid.gov. For full-time graduate assistantships, the University will provide tuition remission for 4.5 credits for the fall semester and 4.5 credits of tuition remission for the spring semester. For part-time graduate assistantships, the University will provide tuition remission for 2.25 credits for the fall semester and 2.25 credits of tuition remission for the spring semester. Students with full-time graduate assistantships will work, on average, 20 hours per week, for a maximum of 640 hours per academic year, while students with part-time graduate assistantships will work, on average, 10 hours per week for a maximum of 320 hours per academic year. The tuition remission will not be credited to a student's account without a valid FAFSA on file with the Financial Aid Office. *International students are exempt from the FAFSA requirement.*
Compensation is paid to students
If you receive and accept a graduate assistantship, you relinquish any claim to graduate scholarship program awards for that academic year.
Graduate assistants are expected to maintain a minimum GPA of 3.25 each semester. Current graduate students must maintain a cumulative graduate GPA of 3.25 to renew or receive consideration for a new graduate assistantship position.
If you must resign from an assistantship prior to the end of your appointment (except in the event of illness or disability resulting in the inability to fulfill the requirements of the assistantship), the following conditions will apply:
If your resignation or termination becomes effective at the end of the fall semester, you will forfeit tuition remission for the spring semester.
If your resignation or termination becomes effective at any time prior to the end of your contracted term, your tuition discount will be prorated pursuant to the number of weeks remaining in the semester from the date of resignation or termination, and you will be responsible for repayment of any tuition balance due thereafter. The prorated amount shall be calculated by the Financial Aid Office and must be paid to the Cashier's Office within 30 days of the adjustment. You will also forfeit the remaining stipend pursuant to the number of weeks remaining in the semester.
If you resign from your assistantship, it is strongly recommended that you give a minimum of two weeks notice in writing to your supervisor.
The University reserves the right, after giving 30 days notice, to terminate the assistantship on the recommendation of your supervisor or dean if you fail to perform assigned duties satisfactorily, to meet academic standards set by the University, or to conform to the policies of the University.
Graduate assistantships are not renewed automatically. It is the responsibility of the student to apply for these opportunities for the next academic year by the established deadline.
Gross and/or willful misconduct or moral turpitude will result in immediate termination of the assistantship appointment.

Graduate Financial Aid
All students are strongly encouraged to apply for financial aid. In our experience, those families that do not apply for financial aid would often be eligible for some assistance.
In addition, students who wish to borrow through the Federal Direct Loan Program must still complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Steps To Apply for Graduate Aid
We recommend that you file your federal tax return(s) as soon as possible, so you can take advantage of the IRS Data Retrieval Tool when completing the FAFSA. Using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool will help you complete your FAFSA faster and more accurately. It is available for those who submit a FAFSA online and will allow you to pull parent (where applicable) and student (where applicable) tax-filing information directly from the IRS onto your FAFSA.
Note: If you are not eligible to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, you will still find the FAFSA much easier to complete with complete federal tax return data.
The University's Title IV School Code to be used on the FAFSA is 003296.
You must renew your FAFSA each year.
For Returning Students
Returning students are encouraged to file the FAFSA by April 15th for consideration of need-based programs.
The financial aid review process for returning students begins upon the completion of the spring semester, at which time academic progress is evaluated.
Students who wish to borrow a Federal Direct Loan will automatically be reviewed for the loan.
Students' parents applying for a PLUS loan must renew the request annually by going through a credit check and requesting a new loan at studentaid.gov. PLUS borrowers are encouraged to wait until July 1st to complete their PLUS application request.
Alternative/Private Loans must be reapplied for annually starting in June. Interested borrowers should go to elmselect.com for additional and comparative information on private education loan products.

- The FAFSA or Renewal FAFSA should be completed online as soon as possible after October 1 for the upcoming academic year.
- The priority filing date for incoming freshmen to file the FAFSA is December 15.
- Students who submit the FAFSA by the priority filing date are given first consideration for all need-based assistance awarded and administered by the university.
If you provided a valid social security number and email address, you will receive an email notification with instructions for viewing and printing your Student Aid Report (SAR).
The SAR is notification of your application and eligibility status and provides a means of correcting and confirming your application data. If you did not provide a valid email address or a valid social security number, a paper SAR will be mailed to you.
Check your SAR for accuracy and make sure that Marywood University is listed as a recipient of your information. As long as Marywood University is listed as a recipient of your data, that information should be transmitted electronically to the institution for review.
If you were selected for verification or other documentation has been requested by the Financial Aid Office, we strongly recommend that you respond within 14 days of the date of our request.
Failure to do so could result in delays, reductions, and cancellation of your aid. Some of the most common reasons for additional documentation requests include, but are not limited to:
- Selective service registration
- Proof of social security number and/or date of birth
- Veteran status
- Proof of citizenship
Students enrolled on at least a half-time basis (at least 3 credits) in an eligible program may apply for the Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan and the Federal Direct PLUS Loan for Graduate Students.
Graduate Scholarships and Assistantships are available in select programs.
Graduate students are not eligible for federal and institutional need-based grants. As with undergraduate students, a graduate student is not eligible for Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans or Federal Direct Graduate PLUS loans unless they are accepted into a graduate program as a matriculated student. Students should contact the Graduate Admissions Office or their particular graduate departments for questions regarding their matriculated status.
