Hello and welcome to Marywood’s Department of Psychology and Counseling.
As you navigate this page, I think you will notice some unique strengths in what we have to offer potential undergraduate and graduate students. The first is the variety of programs available.
- At the undergraduate-level, interested students have opportunities to pursue a general or clinical track with the Psychology Bachelor of Science major along with minors in Psychology and in Counseling & Development. The curriculum for undergraduate students is structured yet flexible with a clear set of required core courses to provide a solid understanding of the current field of psychology and excellent preparation for a variety of careers and for optional graduate training. The Department also offers a relatively large number of elective credits, thus allowing students to pursue their passion with individualized, advanced courses in psychology.
- At the graduate-level, we train future clinicians, practitioners, and researchers with degree programs in Clinical Psychology (Masters & PsyD), School Counseling, and Mental Health Counseling. Many of these graduate programs lead to professional certification and a license to practice, which can be a crucial advantage when seeking employment. Our training focuses on a scientist/practitioner model that emphasizes methods for generating new knowledge, which can then be applied to clinical cases with the confidence that comes from empirically supported interventions.
A second unique strength is our faculty, who are supportive, extremely knowledgeable, and competent as teachers and as researchers and practitioners. My colleagues and I take special care to stay in touch with the experience students are having as they navigate their education. Our doors are always open, and we are committed to the success of the student members of our Department. This commitment produces results. Our doctoral students are often placed at some of the most prestigious and competitive internships available, and our Masters students are regular scholarship and award winners at the state and national levels. Upon graduation, all of our Marywood alumni are competitive and highly sought after new employees.
It should be clear that I personally have a great deal of pride and confidence in my colleagues and our programs. I am quite sure that both are one of the finest in the country. If you take some time to review our offerings, I think you will agree.
