MARYWOOD UNIVERSITY PRESENTS A WEEKEND WITH BREAD AND PUPPET THEATRE SCRANTON, PA-February 28, 2008. The Insalaco College of Creative Arts and Management at Marywood University will present a performance that explores the art and theatrics of puppetry, with Bread and Puppet Theatre on March 9, at 3 p.m., in the Sette LaVerghetta Center for the Performing Arts. The public performance is the culmination of a weekend-long workshop presented to Marywood University students, faculty, staff, and friends by artist John Bromberg and Peter Schumann, the Bread and Puppet founder. The weekend is part of John Bromberg's month-long display at Marywood University, titled The Sisyphis Project - Part II. Bread and Puppet Theatre is one of the oldest nonprofit, self-supporting theatrical companies in the country. Founded by Mr. Schumann, Bread and Puppet Theatre was created in New York City in 1962. The company became famous for its staged processions and pageants during the Vietnam War. In 1970, Bread and Puppet moved from New York City to Goddard College in Vermont, where they combined puppetry with gardening and bread baking. In 1974, the company moved again to a farm in Glover, Vermont, where they settled into a 140-year-old barn. Each Bread and Puppet performance incorporates the overall theme of universal peace. Frequently, the company incorporates social, political, and environmental issues into its performances. The company also performs morality plays, which depict how people should treat each other. Through the use of music, dance, and slapstick comedy, Bread and Puppet performances feature giant puppets, masks, costumes, paintings, buildings, and landscapes. The theatre company performs traveling puppet shows. Shows range from performances presented by company members to outdoor pageants that require the participation of many volunteers. At many performances, Bread and Puppet distributes bread to its audiences. The performance is free and open to the public.
