Marywood University announced the $2.3 million agreement of the long-term loan of The Maslow Collection in the spring of 2007. In addition to the art work, Marywood also received financial gifts to renovate space within the Shields Center for Visual Arts to create the Maslow Study Gallery for Contemporary Art and to establish a million dollar endowment to the University. The endowment is used to support the collection and its use as an educational tool by the University, as well as provide for the Collection Curator and programmatic opportunities for Marywood students and the greater community.

The Maslow Collection contains more than 500 works by 150 individual artists, including prints by noted artists Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein and Robert Rauchenberg.

In addition to the works in The Maslow Collection, there is also a research library, an informational website and a curator research library. The information and the diversity of the works available provide the faculty and students with options for comparison and discussion of issues relating to process, content, style and materials in painting, printmaking, drawing, photography and sculpture. The Collection also provides options for illustrating and prompting discussion of issues in art history, especially pertaining to the period between the 60s and the 80s.

The major construction for the Maslow Study Gallery for Contemporary Art was completed in January 2008. Recently, the gallery held The Bread and Puppet Theatre ephemera and exhibited some pieces on April 5 by Andy Warhol, Jim Dine, Robert Rauschenberg, Frank Stella and Jasper Johns to compliment SENIOR EXHIBITION & Open House.

The Maslow Collection at Marywood University will be on display through June 27, 2008, in both the Maslow Study Gallery for Contemporary Art and the Mahady Gallery. Admission to the galleries is free and open to the public, seven days a week. Gallery hours are Monday, Thursday, and Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and weekends from 1 to 4 p.m. For further information or directions, contact the Marywood University art department at (570) 348-6278, or www.marywood.edu/galleries.
