Accessing the Article Databases from Off Campus

or help me get into EBSCOhost!

Having difficulties accessing the online databases we have here at Marywood while you are at home?
Here are some helpful pointers that might help resolve these issues.
First off, many people miss the fact that there is a seperate access point for off-campus users.
If you are using the correct system, you will always have an address bar that says 'http://marywood1.marywood.edu...' at the start.
You are 'proxying' to get to these databases- that is, using Marywood's server to load local copies for you to look at, tricking the database into thinking you are really using our on campus machines.
You cannot simply go to www.ephost.com or www.jstor.org; these databases will not know who you are nor accept your login information.
For those of you who like to type in absolute addresses here is where you should go:
http://ac.marywood.edu/proxy

That line above will guarantee that you are going to the correct list of databases. Bookmark it or add it to your favourites and it will save you frustration later.
When you are done reading this page, click that link!

If you go to the Marywood Home page, you get to the databases by clicking on the 'library' link and then the 'online databases' link in green; this will take you to:
http://www.marywood.edu/library/databases.htm
Note that this is the page you probably got HERE from!
You can pick from this list, but you MUST always click on the '[Off-campus Access]' version (the second link).
There is also a link directly in the middle of the page which says 'Off campus access' which will take you to the page I listed above (ac.marywood.edu/proxy).
If you have clicked on a link and the address bar does not start with 'http://marywood1.marywood.edu...' you have skipped the proxy and things will simply not work for you!

Now, once you are on the correct list, you will be asked for a username and a password.
You don't need to call and set anything up; every student has an account created when they register!
Sometimes there is a little confusion about which username and which password to use.
You should use the email username and password which came off of your Confirmation of Registration paper.
Your student number (a long series of digits) and your student pin (4 digits) are on this page, but don't use them!
Your WebCT username and password is also useless here, don't try it.
Next, it will want your username- this is your email username, shorn of the @ac.marywood.edu; use all lowercase letters.
It will normally be your first initial and your last name, but people with common last names might differ from that.(john smiths may have josmith or johsmith, et cetera).
If you don't know your email username, call or email me! (helpdesk@marywood.edu, 570-340-6070)
Next, it will want your email password. This is an 8 digit password. Three letters, one number, then one letter and three numbers.
The pattern is always the same, so if you are confused about whether it is an o or a 0, check the pattern (abc1a123).
Enter this in all lowercase letters as well!
Now, click on 'submit query'; this will pass you through to the appropriate search engine.

That's it! Search away. Stop reading this unless you hare having difficulties.

Problems
If you get a 'Password denied' or something like that, make sure you are on the correct login page!
The login page will always mention Marywood and have my phone number on it (340-6070).
If the page asking for password does not have this number, does not mention that it is for current Marywood students only, you have somehow gone the wrong way.
Refer to the top of this document and make sure to check the address.

If for some reason you get a 'this page cannot be displayed' it is almost certainly because you are behind a firewall.
Most high schools and hospitals have protective measures against people proxying out.
You can eventually get past them, but you have to have your network technicians contact me so I can give them all the technical details.

If you are having problems with the actual databases, especially finding appropriate articles, you need more help than I can give you.
You're in luck though, because the Library keeps a Research Librarian on staff during all open hours who are specialists in using these systems.
You can reach them by calling 961-4707 and asking for a Research Librarian.
Be careful to indicate that you want skilled help with research or the operator may route you directly to me.
Note: For faculty (especially pro-rata and adjunct), access requires having a student email account.
If you have a Marywood Exchange account (accessed by an AS/400 Username and password) you cannot access the databases with it!
If you wish to access these databases off-campus, contact the help desk and I will have a 'student' account created for you.
