and Borrowing Policies
Laptops
and Software
The laptop computers are available for checkout through Marywood University
Library and are available for use within the library.
The laptops are IBM ThinkPad's using Microsoft's Windows XP operating
system. Each computer has the following software:
- Microsoft Office 2003
- Mozilla Firefox web browser
- Internet Explorer web browser
- Adobe Acrobat Reader 7
- Winzip
- Apple QuickTime
- Real Player
Purpose
Laptops are being made available to the students to checkout while they
are working in the Marywood University Library. The laptops are available
to facilitate access to tools such as Microsoft Office 2003 and the Internet
in order to aid the students in their studying.
Please note that printing is not available from the laptops. If you would
like to print a document, please save it to a flash drive, CD, or temporarily
to the student folder and then print from an available desktop computer.
Borrowing
A valid Marywood University Student ID is required to checkout a laptop
computer. Borrowing is on a first come first served basis; reservations
may not be made.
The borrower's ID will be left at the circulation desk for the duration
of the checkout period. The borrower will also be asked to read and sign
the library's Laptop Use Policy the first time they checkout a laptop.
The signed policy will be kept on file with the library for the current
semester.
Please return the laptop turned off. When the laptop has been returned
to the circulation desk the staff person will turn on the laptop and physically
inspect it. Once the Check-in process has been completed the borrower's
ID will be returned.
Loan Period
Laptop loan periods are for 2 hours and may be renewed if no one is waiting
to use a laptop. All laptops must be returned to the library's circulation
desk no later than 1/2 hour prior to closing.
Failure to return a laptop on time may impact the borrower's future use
of the laptops.
Fines
Fines for late returns are $10.00 per hour and will be charged in 15-minute
increments (e.g. If the laptop is 15 minutes late the fine will be $2.50;
if it is 30 minutes late the fine will be $5.00).
If the laptop is not returned before the closing of the library the borrower
will be charged for the full amount to replace the borrowed laptop with
a similar model.
Borrower Responsibilities
- Borrowers will abide by all Marywood University rules while using
the laptop.
- Borrowers accept full responsibility for borrowed laptops and for
any peripheral equipment during the loan period. All equipment must
be returned in the same condition as it was received.
- Laptops are for use only within the library.
- Check-in of a laptop may take a few minutes, please make allowances
for this when returning the laptop.
- Borrowers will be charged the full cost for repairs for any damage
to the laptop incurred during the checkout period or for the full cost
of replacement of the laptop with a similar model for irreparable damage,
theft, or loss.
- Laptops must not be left unattended.
- Laptops are not to be passed on to another student. Each student must
return the laptop that they checked out.
- Do not save any files to the laptop's hard-drive or load any personal
software to the laptop. Any material saved to the laptop will be deleted
when the laptop is checked-in. Files can be saved to either a USB flash
drive (provided by the student) or to a CD (available for purchase from
the circulation desk) or you may wish to e-mail your work to yourself.
- The library is not responsible for any data left on the laptop or
for any damage or loss of data during the loan period.
- Laptops are not to be used to download or upload files from peer-to-peer
networks, to upload, create, or distribute any self-replicating or malicious
software, including, but not limited, to viruses and worms.
