Library Basics

We have brought together some basic information about the library and our services to students to help make your first year experience a good one! Always remember that if you are still in doubt or have a questions about our library - Ask a librarian!

You can access a lot of the library information (e.g. Hours, Workshops), resources (e.g. online catalogs and databases), and services (e.g. Research Help, Subject Guides, helpful handouts) through our Web page at http://www.marywood.edu/library/.

Reference Service

Reference librarians assist patrons in using and locating resources. They answer bibliographical, research, and reference questions. Reference librarians also help students formulate search strategies to use when searching library online catalogs, online databases, and the Internet.

Personal Research Assistance

Do you know the easier and better way to start your research project is to meet with a reference librarian? Call us at x2647 or stop by to make an appointment for a one-on-one session with a librarian. We offer individual help with finding information resources for your assignment/project, and a lot more…

Reciprocal Library Borrowing Privilege

Are you looking for a book the Marywood Library does not own? One option is reciprocal borrowing. The reciprocal borrowing allows Marywood students, faculty, and staff to borrow books directly from the following institutions: College Misericordia, Keystone College, King's College, Lackawanna County Library System, Luzerne County Community College, Penn State Worthington Scranton Campus, University of Scranton, and Wilkes University. The Northeastern Pennsylvania Library Network (http://www.npln.org/) provides access to the collections of most of those libraries.

PALCI E-Zborrow

PALCI E-ZBorrow allows you to search over 50 Pennsylvania academic libraries simultaneously and then put in a request for many of the items you found there directly from the owning libraries. These items will be sent to Marywood Library for you. Items borrowed from other libraries can be picked up and returned at our library. Items are generally delivered within 4-7 days. You will be notified via email when the book is available for pickup. Note PALCI E-ZBorrow only handles requests for books. If you need journal articles, please request it through the Interlibrary Loan.

Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Service provides books, photocopies of articles that are not available at the Marywood University Library. Requests for ILL are made either at the Reference Desk or by sending an electronic ILL request form. On the average, materials borrowed from local libraries take 4-5 days to arrive while items borrowed from other state-wide libraries usually arrive within a week or two. Out-of-state requests or requests from large research centered libraries can take from 2 to 3 weeks to arrive.

Online Article Databases

Article Databases provide access to individual journal and magazine articles, encyclopedia articles, newspaper articles, conference papers, reports in series and chapters in books. When searching for journal articles on your topic, consult the librarian at the Reference Desk. They will guide you to appropriate online databases. Students can access the article databases even if they are not on campus (remotely).  Remote access to the library article databases requires a Marywood e-mail account.

Course Reserves

The library has a small collection of reserve materials (including books, videos, and photocopied articles) that are placed on short-term reserve by instructors. They are located at the Circulation Desk. Electronic reserves are available to the students over the Web. Students can access these documents by searching on our online catalog.

Periodicals: Journals, Magazines, and Newspapers

The print journal collection is arranged alphabetically by the name of the journal. Some journal issues are bound, and others are on microform. If you're unsure where to look for microform and how to use the reader/printer, ask the librarian or serials staff at the desk in the Serials Department on the 1st floor of the library building. The current print journal issues are located on the display shelves against walls on the 1st floor of the library. The library subscribes to several local and national newspapers. The most recent issues are displayed in the Newspaper Reading Room located on the 1st floor. Older issues are on microform. Other newspapers may be found in the online databases.
