Ms. Nancy Amori Hemmler, Intensive English Program Coordinator and Teacher

Message from the Coordinator:

Welcome to the Intensive English Program (IEP) at Marywood University. I hope that viewing Marywood's entire web site will allow you to realize the many benefits of studying here. International students at Marywood often talk about the beauty of the campus and the fact that they feel safe here. They also note that the people are warm, friendly, and welcoming.

The IEP faculty is very knowledgeable, experienced, caring and diverse. The English as a Second Language classes are small, and the courses are interesting and challenging. In addition to your teachers, there are many caring people here to help you should you have any problems or needs. Individuals in the Registrar's office and the Diversity office are among those available to assist you.

I grew up in a family where English and Italian were spoken, and I studied French in high school and college. After receiving my bachelor's degree in English/Secondary Education from Marywood College, I earned my master's degree from the Bread Loaf School of English of Middlebury College, Vermont.

I taught English at the high school level in a public school district for over 13 years. In 1997 I began teaching international students in the IEP at Marywood. From 1998 through 2004, I also taught international students ESL in both the IEP and ESL Connections Program at another college. In addition, I was an ESL tutor for elementary and middle school students in a public school district in 1998 and 1999. ln 2005 I became the IEP Coordinator at Marywood, and I continue to teach in the program. I truly look forward to going to work every day.

Marywood has had students from all over the world. I am constantly impressed by the camaraderie and good will found among the students in the classes and also between the teachers and the students. Students have said that they feel comfortable here and that many friendships have been made as a result of studying at Marywood. On behalf of the entire IEP team at Marywood, I cordially invite you to study with us where our goal is to help you learn English.

Ms. Hong Miao, Teacher

I moved to Northeastern Pennsylvania in 2000 and started to work at Marywood University Library. My job at the library includes teaching information literacy skills and providing reference service. I also teach a freshman seminar course. I enjoy working as a librarian and a processor at Marywood.

I received my bachelor's degree in English and a Graduate Certificate in TESOL in China. I had my master's degree in Sociology from the University of Arkansas and a second master's in Library and Information Sciences from the State University of New York at Albany.

I had taught ESL at Nankai University in China for 10 years before embarking on the adventurous journey to the U.S. Coming from a different cultural background, I have obtained a unique experience as an international student and an ESL teacher on learning and teaching English as a second language. Studying English is both challenging and enjoyable!

Ms. Barbara Moyer, Teacher

I am pleased to be part of Marywood’s Intensive English Program after more than thirty years of teaching experience in public school districts. My love of languages began early as I grew up in a Czech family and was enrolled in a Slovak school at age six. After studying French and Latin in high school, I pursued a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and Latin at College Misericordia, Dallas, Pennsylvania. My graduate work included a master’s degree in educational administration from the University of Scranton, a second master’s from Villanova, and postgraduate studies at Drexel University.

Before coming to Marywood, I was Foreign Language and ESL Coordinator for the Abington Heights School District, Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania. Through teaching, traveling, and participating in foreign exchange programs, I have made international friendships which I cherish. As a result of my personal experiences, I know that learning a new language and becoming comfortable in a foreign culture can be challenging. Marywood’s serene campus, caring faculty, and small class sizes provide great opportunities for meeting the challenge.

Ms. Suzanne Weidner, Teacher

Growing up in a home with many international visitors sparked my interest in other cultures and languages. Living in Germany for a summer at age 16 fueled this international fascination even more. I returned to Germany for a semester abroad while completing a bachelor's degree in German/International Business from the Pennsylvania State University. After working in a bank marketing research firm in Washington D.C., I left to complete a master's degree in Secondary Education focusing on second language learning and received a Pennsylvania German teaching certificate from the University of Scranton.

However, I found my passion for teaching English as a Second/Foreign language with my first ESL post in a migrant education program. To further prepare my teaching skills I studied in England at an International Teacher Training Institute and received a certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language to Adults. Even after thirteen years of teaching experience in the USA and in Chile, I continue to enroll in graduate ESL courses to enhance my teaching knowledge and skills.

After being in over 20 countries as a tourist, a student, or a professional, I understand our students' needs and concerns. It is a pleasure to return to Marywood's Intensive English Program and be a part of a great team.
