STATEMENTS and SYMBOLS
Selected Paintings and Prints from The Maslow Collection

There is art that reveals itself immediately by making a statement, however large or small, to its viewer. Then there is art that is much slower to reveal itself, and only through a journey of discovery are the symbols found. This exhibit explores that ever-present dichotomy in selected paintings and prints from The Maslow Collection. Statements and Symbols was the result of an internship program partnered between Marywood University and The Maslow Collection. Arts Administration student Heather McDonald Budow, working with Bob Schweitzer, Curator for The Maslow Collection, developed the conceptual theme and organized this exhibition. The exhibit includes works by Nicholas Africano, Jennifer Bartlett, Robert Cumming, Peter Halley, Jane Hammond, Edward Henderson, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, Edward Ruscha, and Sandy Skoglund. For installation views of the exhibit and list of works, go to The Maslow Collection and click on Current/Recent Exhibitions.

Between pole and tropic: Paintings by Eric Karpeles
F. Lammot Belin Art Scholarship Exhibition
The subject of his work could be described as the interiorization of landscapes. An ongoing journey to understand and give voice to the classical nexus known as "the pastoral" –– the meeting place of opposing forces of landscape and being, the crossroads of nature and man, of chaos and order –– Karpeles' large scale paintings attempt to capture the brutish realities of life and the meditative possibilities for coping.
"The painter Eric Karpeles has used his urban and literary erudition to approach nature with luminous appreciation. His distinctive shimmering autumnal tones and nuanced abstract forms are imbued with and emanate from Henry James and Elizabeth Bishop no less than late George Inness and Mark Rothko." Patterson Sims, Director, Montclair Art Museum of Art

Eric Karpeles was born in New York City and worked in life classes at the Art Students League from the age of eleven. He lived as an exchange student with a Hindu family in India when he was fifteen, and this exposure to another world marked him. He graduated from Haverford College with an honors degree in comparative literature and fine arts, received a diploma from the Ruskin School at Oxford, and earned a masters degree from The New School. His career has been anchored in a life of the studio; for more than twenty years he has worked in a valley of rolling hills near Tyler Hill, Pennsylvania. Karpeles has created monumental works both under personal motivation—executing, funding and installing the Sanctuary Project, a meditation space for the HIV/AIDS communities across the United States—and private commission—The Mary and Laurance S. Rockefeller Chapel, a permanent installation at The HealthCare Chaplaincy in New York. He has also written on aesthetics, and is a recipient of grants and awards for his painting including a recent scholarship award from the F. Lammot Belin Foundation. Karpeles made paintings inspired by Elizabeth Bishop for an international colloquium in Brazil, and is currently at work on a book about Proust and painting.
