- IT HAPPENED HERE | FRANCIS CAPE
"What happened in New Orleans was not only an act of God, it was also an act of government.” It Happened Here is an installation that includes photographs taken by the artist on a 2-1/2 hour walk through Gentilly and St. Roch in Central New Orleans two months after Katrina. The color photographs focus on the high water mark, or waterline, a strong horizontal element that acts as a sign of what had happened. The exhibition includes folding chairs from Four Folding Chairs, 2006 (folding chairs are moveable architecture like FEMA trailers set up in front yards), photographs from Waterline, 2006 (a gallery installation at Murray Guy in 2006), and drawings. Trained in woodworking, Francis Cape typically carpenters architectural interventions that recently have included photography. He is represented by Murray Guy in New York and in Germany by Andreas Grimm Gallery, and is a selected artist participating in Prospect.1 New Orleans, the largest biennial of international contemporary art ever organized in the United States. www.franciscape.com
