Take the National Women's Check-Up Day Pledge

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has issued a challenge to our nation’s women during National Women’s Health Week beginning on Mother’s Day, May 13, 2007. All women are invited to visit their website to take the “Check-Up Day” pledge. As a participant in National Women's Check-Up Day, I will:

  • use the interactive check-up wizard to get an idea of the types of screenings I may need;
  • contact my doctor or nurse to discuss these and other tests or screenings I may need to get now;
  • schedule an appointment for at least one of these preventive screenings to occur within the next 90 days; and
  • I will celebrate a healthier me and a healthier U.S.

Visit www.4women.gov/whw/ for more information on how to become an active participant is this important commemoration!

 Free Radon Test Kits

The American Lung Association of PA-Scranton Office is partnering with the NEPA Women’s Health Alliance to provide radon test kits to those who are interested in checking their homes for this radioactive gas. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer deaths in the United States. It is an odorless, colorless gas formed by the breakdown of radium, which is a radioactive product of decaying uranium contained in nearly all rocks and soils. Radon can enter your home from the rocks and soil around and under your house through gaps and cracks in the foundation and insulation around service pipes, and through sumps, drains, walls and other openings. The only way to know if your home has a high level of radon is to test for it.

The supply of free radon test kits are limited and requests will be answered on a first-come, first-serve basis. For information on how you can receive a free test kit, please call the American Lung Association at 346-1784.

Tips & Tricks

Are your children or grandchildren “fussy-eaters”? Here are a few easy “Tips & Tricks” that help children learn to enjoy healthy nutritious foods.

  • Take your children on a tour of the supermarket. Use the child size shopping carts. Talk to them about “seasons” (i.e. strawberries in summer, oranges in winter) and different parts of the world/cultures of the various fruits and vegetables. Let them each pick out a fruit or vegetable that they’ve never tried before to take home and sample.
  • Invite several of their friends over for a “taster” party. Have them come in their best party clothes and serve “exotic” food items such as kiwi, starfruit, hummus and pita bread on the good china.
  • Have a “Colors of the Rainbow” party. Have the children select fruits and vegetables from all the colors of the rainbow, slice and present them to look like a rainbow on the platter.
  • Nothing beats letting kids help cook to get them to try new foods. Name your child “Chef of the Day,” let him/her plan the meal, help shop, then prepare and serve — make it an event!
