NATIONAL FELLOWSHIPS AND SCHOLARSHIPS

The following information can help Marywood University students who may be considering applying for one or more nationally recognized awards such as the Rhodes, Fulbright and Marshall Fellowships.

All of the fellowships listed here require extensive preparation before a student will be able to submit an application. For this reason, students should research application procedures far in advance of the application deadlines.

 SCHOLARSHIPS FOR JUNIORS AND SOPHOMORES:

TRUMAN SCHOLARSHIPS

Eighty scholarships for juniors, covering academic expenses through senior year and graduate school, to a limit of $30,000. These are for students with an outstanding capacity for public service who want to make a difference in society.


UDALL SCHOLARSHIPS

Seventy scholarships for sophomores and juniors, paying one year's academic expenses up to $5,000.These are for outstanding students who plan a career in environmental public policy. Also for sophomores and juniors who are Native American or Alaskan Natives planning careers in health care and tribal public policy.
 
 NATIONAL SECURITY EDUCATION PROGRAM

These grants provide opportunities to develop or strengthen the capabilities of U.S. students in languages, culture, and international fields of study. These grants are an excellent source of income for study and/or work overseas.

JACK  KENT COOKE  SCHOLARSHIP  PROGRAM

The Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship Program (Continuing 4-Year College Students) is open to any student who iscurrently attending a 4-year college or university. The award amount will be variable up to a maximum of $30,000 annually to fund tuition and fees for the remainder of the scholar’s undergraduate degree. Scholarships are renewable each year for the duration of the undergraduate degree program, as long as the scholar continues to meet the eligibility requirements.

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR GRADUATING SENIORS

RHODES SCHOLARSHIP

Thirty-two scholarships for two or three years of graduate study at Oxford University in any field. The scholarship pays academic fees plus an allowance to cover round trip fares and personal expenses. Applicants must be graduates under the age of 24 by the start of their year at Oxford. Four criteria govern selection: scholarship, character, leadership and physical vigor.
These are the hardest scholarships to enter and the most difficult to win.

MARSHALL SCHOLARSHIPS

Forty scholarships for two or three years of graduate study at any British university or business school. The scholarship pays air fares, tuition, fees and additional expenses. Applicants must be graduates under the age of 26 by the start of their year in Britain. Scholarships are awarded for academic ability and leadership potential.
These are the second most difficult scholarships to win.


Madison Fellowships

Junior Fellowships are awarded to students who are about to complete, or have recently completed, their undergraduate course of study and plan to begin graduate work on a full-time basis. The maximum amount of each award is up to $24,000, prorated over the individual period of study, thus making the James Madison Fellowship the leading award for secondary level teachers undertaking the study of the Constitution. Fellowship payments cover the actual costs of tuition, required fees, books, and room and board but cannot exceed $12,000 per academic year. Normally, Fellows receive less than these maximum amounts.


FULBRIGHT GRANTS

Eight hundred scholarships in over 50 countries for one year of study, teaching or research. Graduating seniors are eligible. Scholarships cover round-trip transportation, tuition, books and living expenses. Applicants design their own projects in a specific country, and must represent the United States well.
To win this, you need an excellent reason to study or research in a particular country.


NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION FELLOWSHIP

Eight-hundred-fifty fellowships worth $15,000 plus a cost of education allowance for up to three years of graduate study leading to masters and doctoral degrees in engineering, mathematics and a wide range of sciences. The fellowship can be taken up at any accredited U.S. or foreign academic institution. Green card holders may also apply.
MELLON FELLOWSHIPS

Eighty-one fellowships worth $15,000 plus a cost of education allowance for the first year of graduate school in the U.S. or Canada. For students who intend to make a career of teaching or scholarship in the humanistic field.  

JAVITS FELLOWSHIPS

Seventy-five fellowships, worth up to $15,000 a year for up to four years graduate study leading to a doctorate or MFA degree in the humanities, social sciences and arts. The award can be used at any U.S. institution of higher education.
ROTARY

Rotary International, a world-wide civic organization, provides generous and highly prestigious scholarships for post-baccalaureate foreign study. Types of scholarships available: The Academic year Ambassadorial Scholarship for up to $25,000 of expenses for a full academic year in a foreign degree-granting program, and the 3 or 6 month Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarships
