Faculty Information

Thank you for vising the Honors and Fellowships webpage for faculty. You'll find information about how you can be involved in honors education here at Marywood University.

The Honors Program

Faculty advisors:

If you advise students, you may perhaps be their first link to honors courses and the Honors Program. You can encourage qualified students to take honors courses, pursue the Citation in Honors, and refer them to the Office of Honors and Fellowships. Students who have a minimum QPA of 3.0 are eligible to take honors courses. You can follow the link to the Honors Degree Program for more details.

Incoming freshmen who have SAT scores of 1100-1180 are eligible to take one honors course. Freshmen with SAT scores higher than 1180 are eligible for two honors courses.

Honors Courses:

Faculty can offer honors courses. Honors courses are usually small, seminar-style classes that feature more discussion, collaboration, and qualitatively different assignments that challenge students.

Honors Enrichment courses are also an option for students who need to complete their honors requirements. Faculty members can offer a small number of seats in a traditional section of their course to honors students, and require different work from those students. Professors and students collaborate on a course of study for enrichment courses, and then submit an Honors Enrichment Contract to the department chair and Director of Honors and Fellowships for approval. Please note that while all students who have a 3.00 QPA are eligible to take honors courses, only students pursuing the Citation in Honors may take honors enrichment courses.

In order to offer an Honors Enrichment course,

1. A student should first address the faculty member about taking a traditional course for Honors credit.

2. If the faculty member agrees, the next step is to receive tentative permission from the department chair.

3. If permission is granted, the student and teacher should consult on a course of study that would reflect Honors level work, and fill out the Honors Enrichment Contract.

4. This contract is then submitted to the Director of Honors and Fellowships for final approval.

5. Once approval is received, the department chair will add an Honors section of the course with one seat per Honors student to the master schedule. The student can then add the Honors section.

Professors can also find more information at the Hallmarks of Honors Courses link. Please also consider the article published in the July 23, 2004 edition of The Chronicle of Higher Education by Scranton native Jay Parini entitled "The Well-Tempered Seminar."

Honors Thesis Directors and Readers:

Over the course of their senior year, students pursuing the Citation in Honors write their honors thesis. The thesis is worth 3 credits, and divided over two semesters. Students work with their thesis director as they conduct research, and write the manuscript.

The thesis director meets regularly with the student to assess his or her progress, guide research, and evaluate and prepare the manuscript for publication in the honors journal Scientia.

The thesis reader is encouraged to play a role in the development of the thesis. The biggest responsibilty of the reader, however, is to evaluate drafts of the completed manuscript. Honors thesis should combine the student's major area of study with a focus on the liberal arts. Readers offer constructive criticism that will clarify, revise, and improve the overall impression of the thesis.

Scholarships and Fellowships

Faculty members can encourage qualified students to apply for major awards such as the Fulbright, Truman or Goldwater scholarships. The Office of Honors and Fellowships houses information on major scholarships and fellowships, and can work with students on their applications.

Since preparation for awards of this nature require early preparation, faculty can also collaborate with the Director of Honors and Fellowships on a course of study that would prepare students for candidacy.

We have set up a page that briefly describes some of the awards that are available along with links to their homepages. Please also send information for scholarships or fellowships that are not listed.

Research
