OTHER WORKSHOPS

Computer Training and User Support offers a number of additional workshops covering such areas as Windows, file management, graphics, Web tools, e-mail, and scanning.

All About Flash Drives
Flash drives (also known as memory drives, pen drives, jump drives) are a removable and portable storage device that no one should be without. They can be purchased in various sizes (512 MB, 1 GB, 2 GB) and used in both PC and Macintosh computers by plugging it into the USB port. This Learn in 30 session will show you how to save, open, and delete files that are saved on a flash drive, as well as the proper "operating techniques."

Backing Up Your Files
This important session walks you through the steps of backing up valuable files from your computer's hard drive into a password-protected network folder. It is recommended that everyone back up and do so at least once a month to prevent losing your files should the hard drive fail.

Burning CDs
Most PCs now come equipped with CD-RW (rewriteable) drives. CDs can store over 500 times the amount a floppy disk can, and are more reliable. This session will walk you through the steps for saving files to a CD-R disc using both Windows and IBM's built-in software.

Creating Surveys with Survey Monkey
Do you dread the thought of developing and sending surveys? What about analyzing the results? Learn how to streamline this task and see your results and statistics instantly with this free web tool called Survey Monkey. We will walk you through the basics of designing, editing, and sending your survey.

Enhancing Your Work Using Pictures/Clipart
This workshop covers quick ways to find clipart, including Microsoft's web site where you can download pictures into your own clipart gallery. Auto shapes, fills, 3-D and shadow effects, text wrap techniques, drawing arrows, and the use of Word Art will be demonstrated.

Enhancing Your Work Using the Drawing Toolbar
Have you ever wondered how to create a really neat letterhead or draw an arrow to emphasize an object? How about taking a picture and making it into an unusual 3-D portrait that you could use in just about any application. These and many other creative tricks can easily be done by using the Drawing Tools Toolbar available in all Office applications. This workshop will acquaint you with the many features available to enhance your work. Dare to be creative!

Getting Rid of the Nasties
If you sometimes feel that your computer can possibly invade your private life, you're not far from wrong. Our society seems over-run with misfits who want to create havoc; and one of the methods they use is to get personal with your computer and, thus, much of your private information. What's happening when your computer suddenly seems to take on a life of its own? How do you recognize that there even is a problem and, more importantly, how do you prevent or cure it? This workshop will provide some answers and bring you new hope that you can live in a fairly safe world—at least as far as your computer is concerned.

Gmail
Gmail is Google's free Web email. Students and auxiliary staff use this service to access their Marywood email. Others can sign up for a Gmail personal email account and then take advantages of its numerous features--uploading pictures to the Web to share with family and friends, and collaborate on documents and spreadsheets with other Gmail users.

Organizing Your Files
This session helps you become more organized by creating folders and subfolders in your My Documents folder. We will show you how to move files from one folder into another or save files directly into these folders. Renaming and deleting files will also be covered. Lastly we will show you how to find those "lost" files that you just can't remember where you saved them, or even, what you named them.

Scanning Images
When there are no clipart files that really fit the image you want, scanning is the next option. This workshop will give you scanning basics and then explain how to utilize the scanned images in Word or PowerPoint.

Scanning Paper Text into Electronic Text
Rather than typing everything from scratch, why not learn how to convert that written paper-copy text automatically to electronic text? By using OCR (ocular character recognition) software, written text can be scanned, then proofread and finally converted to whatever format you want, usually Word. You’ll learn how easy it is as well as how to avoid any pitfalls that might occur.

Scanning Slides and Negatives
Using the HP Scanjet that is in our computer labs and in various offices, you will discover how easy it is to scan slides and negatives. It’s all in a very amazing lid. The results can be greatly enhanced with PhotoShop although not essential. Simple changes in PhotoShop will be included in this workshop. Bring slides or negatives with you or just come and we’ll provide all you need.

Sharing and Protecting Files
Do you have someone constantly asking you for the same file that's on your computer? Do you need others to look at one of your files and possibly make changes or additions? Rather than printing it out over and over or sending it numerous times as an attachment, why not share it? This can be done with as much privacy and constrictions that you might need by using sharing options and/or protection tools. This workshop will give you a number of creative ways to make this happen.

SPSS Basics
Before you start that questionnaire for your research, you need to learn how you will use the statistics that you gather. SPSS is designed specifically for this process and is used nation-wide; but there are some data that it cannot process appropriately. Learn how to make this program work for you. Our workshop will provide the basics to get you started and ready to plan your research instrument.

Squirrel Mail
This workshop covers how to check Marywood exchange server e-mail via the Web, using the Squirrel Mail tool. Reading, replying, sending, and deleting e-mail, as well as using the contacts list will be demonstrated. Preferences and settings of this web-based e-mail reader will also be covered.

The Online Help Desk
When you are stumped while working on a project, need to know the steps to perform some task, or just want to find the answer to a question, why not take a look at Marywood's new Web offering, the Online Help Desk. Frequently asked questions, documentation, and videos covering just about every common desktop application, basic technology, course management tool (WebCT or Moodle), and even questions about your telephone, can be searched and the answers found here. This workshop introduces you to our Help Desk and how best to use it. You will sign up for an account and see how you can submit a ticket (to one of our experts) if the answer cannot be found there.

Tips, Tricks and Shortcuts
You may already know some keyboard shortcuts to specific applications such as Word, but you may not know that many shortcuts can be used in lots of other Office applications, such as PowerPoint, Excel, and Access. Areas outside the Office suite also can be simplified. Learn easy ways to shut down your machine, how to quickly get rid of annoying pop-ups, how to move from window to window (quick hint: see what the Alt key plus Tab will do). This workshop probably should be called “Keyboard Magic.”

Using Windows
This is a basic workshop intended for the beginning user of Windows. It covers opening and closing programs using desktop icons, the Quick Launch Bar and the Start Menu; moving and resizing windows; using application buttons and the taskbar; creating folders; common desktop icons such as My Documents, My Computer and My Network Places; customizing the desktop (wallpaper, screensavers); finding files and other computers; as well as understanding some of the more common control panel items.
