Marywood University’s Ninth Annual Community Leadership Celebration, which took place on Thursday, May 5, 2022, honored Sister Gail Cabral, IHM, Ph.D., who recently retired after 52 years as a psychology professor at Marywood. Funds raised at this year’s Community Leadership Celebration (CLC) exceeded $252,000.

To date, the CLC has raised nearly $3.2 million dollars. Marywood University’s CLC event is the University’s only fundraising event that provides special support to Marywood students. Proceeds from this year’s event, as in the past three years, will support the President’s Innovation Fund, a fund that supports Marywood students through initiatives that enhance the academic experience in the IHM tradition.

More than 200 people gathered at the Insalaco Arena in the Center for Athletics and Wellness to celebrate as Marywood proudly bestowed the Lead On Award to Sister Gail, honoring her for her lifelong commitment to education, service, and the common good, as well as her dedication to the psychology and importance of friendship.

Mary Anne Fedrick, Ph.D., retired Marywood dean, and Maria Gogal, Marywood trustee, both longtime friends of Sister Gail, served as committee co-chairs of the event. Guests of the event were entertained by pianist Jim Waltich, vocalist Erin Malloy, and magician and mentalist John Graham. In addition, student vocalists Dominique Ferraro ’25, Gabe Jenceleski ’24, and Sean Wolfe ’24, accompanied by Rick Hoffenberg, DMA, sang “Old Friends” from the Sondheim musical, Merrily We Roll Along.

For 56 years, Sister Gail has been a professed member of the Congregation of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM). Throughout her more than five decades of teaching psychology, she has worked with students on undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels. She was the first director of Marywood’s Ph.D. program in human development and also served as the chairperson of the psychology department. Sister Gail holds a bachelor of arts degree in psychology and a master of science in education from Marywood, as well as a Ph.D. from the Catholic University of America. She received a National Endowment for the Humanities for a two-month seminar in autobiography at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. She has researched, taught, and presented on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator; gender differences; social-cognitive development, particularly in the area of friendship relations; and the relationship of psychology and religion.

The Judge Richard P. and Marion Conaboy Family and Marywood Frontline Workers

Conaboy Family

This year's 7th Annual Community Leadership Celebration went virtual! On September 17th, hundreds of Marywood alumni and friends joined our 2020 Lead On award winners The Judge Richard P. and Marion Conaboy Family in honoring the Marywood University graduates working on the front lines as healthcare workers, educators, social workers, and counselors.

    Community Leadership Celebration

Marywood University’s first ever Virtual Community Leadership Celebration took place on Thursday, September 17, 2020, honoring The Judge Richard P. and Marion Conaboy Family. Marywood joined the honorees in saluting Marywood students, alumni, and community members working on the front lines. Funds raised through this year’s Community Leadership Celebration (CLC) totaled $280,000. Beginning in 2014, to date, the CLC, held annually, has raised $2.5 million dollars for the University.

The evening was emceed by Msgr. Joseph G. Quinn, J.D., J.C.L. and featured powerful performances by student vocalists Mason Marie Clark and Leanne Onofrio, and Michele Conaboy McGrath and Stephen Murphy, as well as testimonials from Sen. Robert P. Casey, Jr., Judge Terrence R. Nealon, and longtime family friend, Rev. Bernard R. McIlhenny, S.J. Also featured was a video montage saluting frontline healthcare workers, educators, social workers, and counselors.

Sr. Mary Persico, IHM, Marywood University President, proudly bestowed The Judge Richard P. and Marion Conaboy Family with the Lead On Award, to recognize their exemplary lifetime community leadership endeavors and the meaningful difference they have made through decades of public service, abiding faith, and dedication to the greater good of all.

“On behalf of my entire extended family, so many of whom are Marywood graduates, we are so honored by this award,” said Atty. Mary Ann Conaboy Abrahamsen ’73. “My parents would have been thrilled to have this.”

“We started in our own family, the 14 of us; that was our own community, and that is where my parents taught us the value of community service,” said Atty. William P. Conaboy, President and CEO of Allied Services. “There is a drastic shortage of trained nurses. We work very closely with Marywood’s PA and Nursing programs, integrating the students needing to be trained to be the future caregivers. The University has done an outstanding job as a neighbor, as a collaborator, as an educator with our system.”

“We were very honored and humbled to act as co-chairs for this event,” said Ann Henry ’73 and Mary Ellen Coleman H('68). “We came together in an unusual way to support Marywood, its students, and the Conaboy Family. While COVID-19 may be keeping us physically distant, our support, love, and friendships continue to bind us together, and, in some ways, may have made us even stronger.”

Marywood University’s CLC event is the University’s largest fundraising event that provides special support to Marywood students. Proceeds from this year’s event will benefit the President’s Innovation Fund, which supports Marywood students through initiatives that enhance the academic experience in the IHM tradition.

To learn more about Marywood University’s Community Leadership Celebration please visit marywood.edu/support/clc or call (570) 348-6238.

Support of this event helps empower Marywood students to shape the future as they discover their passion and realize their purpose. Together we can make a difference in our world.

    We asked for your support.

    You answered resoundingly.

We all partied with a purpose!

The 6th annual Community Leadership Celebration was held on Thursday, May 2nd. Honorees, the Little Sisters of the Poor, were presented with the Lead On award in recognition of their compassion and commitment to the care of poor and elderly persons. This very special occasion honored the Little Sisters while supporting Marywood students who make a difference by helping those in our community who have the greatest need. Business professionals, community leaders and the Marywood University community partied with a passion as we congratulated the Little Sisters of the Poor. NYC Dueling Pianos set the tone as Living Florals roamed the floor and our student vocalists wowed the crowd. Fabulous food, exceptional entertainment, and the company of friends shaped a memorable time for all whose generosity is helping to empower Marywood students as they discover their passion and realize their purpose. We asked. You answered. Together we can make a difference in our world.

2018 Lead On Award Recipients - Bill and Maryla Scranton

A trio of organizers is working to ensure the success of the University’s Fifth Annual Community Leadership Celebration, set for Thursday, May 3, 2018, which will honor former Lt. Governor William W. Scranton III and Maryla Scranton. Patrick Fricchione, M.D., Moosic, Pa.; Linda B. Keene, Taylor, Pa., and Gerard Champi, Dunmore, Pa., have spent the last several months planning the event.

    Fricchione

Dr. Fricchione has dedicated much of his professional life to emergency and occupational medicine, his community, and an ongoing commitment to Marywood University and its students. He holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Pittsburgh, and he attended the Universita per Stranieri (University for Foreigners) in Perugia, eventually earning a degree in Italian language. Dr. Fricchione earned his medical degree from Temple University Medical School. He had two years of surgical training at Presbyterian-University of Pennsylvania Medical Center and completed an Emergency Medicine Residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital before becoming board certified in emergency medicine. He also established the Northeastern Occupational Medicine and Rehabilitation Center, P.C. in Dunmore, Pa., and the Northeastern Medical Center, Wilkes-Barre Twp., Pa., and became a consultant and medical director for several Fortune 500 companies. Dr. Fricchione was one of the first physicians in the state to be trained and certified by both the American Academy of Medical Review Officers (AAMRO) and the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM) as a medical review officer. A Fellow in the American Academy of Disability Evaluating Physicians, he also became certified by the American Board of Independent Medical Examiners. In the community, his work has focused primarily on the arts and education, having served as a past president at the Scranton Cultural Center and, presently, on the executive board at Marywood University. Dr. Fricchione’s connection to Marywood grew from his family’s association with the institution. The Fricchione Daycare Center, established in 1991, was the first large named philanthropy initiative at Marywood, as well as the first of many capital projects that would follow in subsequent years. Dr. Fricchione became a Marywood trustee in 2011, working tirelessly to strengthen and support Marywood’s growth and, especially, its students. Recently, Dr. Fricchione has served as a principal at his family’s business, Simplex Industries and Cornerstone Building Solutions.

    Keene

Mrs. Keene has served as an executive assistant to the Scranton Family for 50 years. In her position as executive assistant, she has had exposure to world affairs; local, state, and national politics; and national and international business. She is a member of the Lackawanna County Women’s Commission; the Chamber of Commerce Women’s Network; the Margery Scranton Council of Republican Women; the Women’s Resource Center Board; and is a trustee for the Covenant Presbyterian Church. She has served as the past president of the Riverside PTA; past president of the Ballet Theatre of Scranton; the past president of the Century Club of Scranton; and was a charter member of the Lackawanna County Library Board, appointed by commissioners Luger and Pettinato. Additionally, Mrs. Keene served as a member of Governor Ridge’s Commission on Judicial Appointments for Lackawanna County for two terms; as past chairperson for the Voluntary Action Center; and she was a former trustee of Elm Park UM Church. She received the Women in Politics award in 2005 from the Margery Scranton Council of Republican Women.

    Champi

Mr. Champi serves as president and chief executive officer of FNCB Bank. He joined FNCB Bank in 1991 and has more than 30 years of banking experience. Mr. Champi is a 1982 graduate of the Pennsylvania State University, where he received a bachelor of science degree in accounting. He earned his master of business administration degree from Wilkes University in 1989. He currently serves as president of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Council Boy Scouts of America and as a board member for the Lackawanna Blind Association and Saint Joseph’s Center. He is past president of the Greater Pittston Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and past president of the Luzerne County Community College Foundation Board of Directors. Additionally, Mr. Champi is a Penn State Worthington Scranton Campus Advisory board member and a lifetime member of the Pennsylvania State University Alumni Association.

The Fifth Annual Community Leadership Celebration will be held in honor of William W. Scranton III, former Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania, and his wife Maryla Scranton.

William W. Scranton III, former Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania, is a fifth generation descendent of the founders of the city of Scranton. He has followed a career similar to his forebears, including business management, community service, and public office. He directs the Scranton Family Office and previously served as the Chairman of the Board of the Harleysville Group of Insurance Companies. Mr. Scranton is currently a member of the boards of Allied Services; Penn’s Northeast; The Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce; Geisinger Marworth; the Willary Foundation; the Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Business and Industry; and tecBRIDGE, an organization he helped found. He has been a strong and persistent voice for a cooperative regional approach to NEPA’s economic revival and for putting behind us our region's historic divisions. As Lieutenant Governor from 1979-1987, he developed and implemented the state’s first energy policy and was instrumental in managing the state’s response to the Three Mile Island crisis. Mr. Scranton created the Pennsylvania Energy Development Authority, developed the blueprint for the Thornburgh administration's comprehensive reform of human services, and championed the state's entrepreneurial revival through the Pennsylvania Small Business Council and Ben Franklin Technology Partners. In 1986, he was the Republican nominee for Governor. Though a seasoned public leader, Mr. Scranton's life has largely been defined outside the halls of political power as an entrepreneur and job creator. A 1969 graduate of Yale University, Mr. Scranton holds honorary degrees from King's College, Lehigh University, and The University of Scranton. He has received numerous awards, including the Pennsylvania Newspaper Publishers Association Award for Investigative Journalism, the Salvation Army Others Award, NEPA Boy Scouts Distinguished Citizen Award, and The National Wildlife Federation Conservation Service Citation.

Maryla Scranton, a community activist and volunteer, has had a long and successful career as a fundraising executive for nonprofit organizations. She has planned and executed annual and capital campaigns that have raised millions of dollars throughout the United States. Mrs. Scranton served as Director of Development for several educational and community organizations, including The University of Scranton; Lackawanna College; Allied Services; Marywood University; and The Langley School, McLean, Virginia. She also served as Vice President of Community Relations and Development for The Mercy Health System regionally, a division of Catholic Health Care Partners, and established the Mercy Foundation and the Monsignor Andrew J. McGowan Institute for Community Health Initiatives. A graduate of Penn State University, Mrs. Scranton started her own business, MPS Consulting, in 2004. She has done volunteer work in Pennsylvania and Virginia. Currently, she is a member of the Board of Governors of The Scranton Area Community Foundation and a Trustee of The University of Scranton. Mrs. Scranton has presented at numerous local and national conferences and has been the recipient of several awards during her career, some of which include: The Children’s Advocacy Center’s Champion of Youth Award, Penn State’s Greater Scranton Chapter Alumnus of the Year Award, and Chair of the Chancellor’s Board at Penn State Scranton.

    3rd Annual Community Leadership Celebration

Northeast Pennsylvania natives Gerry and Marie Terrotta Roche '52 were honored at Marywood's third annual Community Leadership Celebration on May 26, 2016.

Surrounded by hundreds of family members, friends, trustees, and alumni, Gerry and Marie Terrotta Roche '52 graciously accepted the Lead On award from Sister Anne Munley, IHM, Ph.D., at Marywood University’s third annual Community Leadership Celebration. This prestigious award is bestowed upon established community leaders, who have demonstrated an untiring dedication to our region, to our community, and to Marywood University.

With their eloquent and entertaining remarks, these true servant leaders reminded us all of the profound and lasting impact of an IHM education. In the past three years, the Community Leadership Celebration has raised over $1 million, which will support Marywood students through scholarships and programs that focus on academic excellence in the IHM tradition.

Over the last two years, the event generated more than $780,000 toward the new intellectual and social heart of campus.

Art produced and donated by faculty and friends was auctioned at the dinner. Featured artists included: Pamela Parsons, Christine Medley, Dennis Corrigan, Robert Griffith, Matt Povse, Peter Hoffer, and Jack Puhl.
