Social Science Happenings

The Social Sciences Department, with the funding of the Cultural Affairs Committee, presented a fall lecture series "Crisis in Africa".  The session focused on sexual abuse in the Congo, the famine in Somalia, and the continuing oppression in the Sudan.  The Sudan lecture was presented by nationally renowned Sociologist, John Hagan, Ph.D.

On October 27th, Margaret Gannon, IHM, Ph.D., received the Sister Siena Finley Award from the Ethics Institute of Northeastern Pennsylvania.  Because of her teaching and advocacy for justice, she was cited as "creating a context in which ethical decisions can be made".

honor Society Inductions

The semi-annual induction in the two departmental honor societies took place on Sunday, October 23rd.  The Phil Alpha Theta, the National Honor Society in History, inducted five new members - Brent Keyes, Kelsey Knight, Nicholas Murley, Michael Siciliano, and Nicholas Zullo.  Pi Gamma Mu, the National Honor Society in Social Sciences, inducted ten new members - Brianne Appnel, Emily Bylotas, Nina Colianni, Bianca Domahidi, Kelsey Knight, Nicholas Murley, Katherine Shope, Geri Lynn Smith, Stephanie Van Deusen, and Nicholas Zullo.  Congratulations!!

Event at the Comerford Auditorium

On Wednesday, November 30th at 2pm in the Comerford Auditorium in the Science Building, the SSCI 201 - Introduction to Social Science Class - will have a guest speaker, and the presentation is open to all members of the Marywood community.  Mr. Will Creely, Director of Legal and Public Advocacy for the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) will deliver a speech.

     "KNOW YOUR RIGHTS:  FREE SPEECH AND THOUGHT REFORM ON CAMPUS."  An open question and discussion period will follow Mr. Creeley's presentation.

New course for Spring Semester 2012

Public History Minor has been launched.  The spring semester will see the offering of the first courses of a new minor in the department: Public History.  The minor, available to history majors, provides preparation for careers in the following:  Curator, Museum/historic site educator, Historic preservation specialist, Archivist, Researcher of historical agency, Writer/editor, Living history specialist/historical interpretation, Journalist, Oral historian, Historical/editor, and Digital historian.
