James F. Kanavy received his B.A. and M.A. in Political Science from East Stroudsburg University. He completed additional course work on criminal investigation at John Jay College, the New York State Police Academy, the Internal Revenue Service and the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. He has been teaching courses at Marywood since 2006.

From 1973 until 1994, Mr. Kanavy was a Special Agent with the Pennsylvania Crime Commission investigating organized crime and related corruption. From 1990 to 1994 he was the Special Agent-In-Charge of the Northeast and Central regions. From 1994 until 2006, he was an investigator with the Pennsylvania Office of Inspector General. From 2002 until 2006, he was the Investigations Manager for the Northeast region. He is a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and the Marine Corps Intelligence Association and a former member of The International Association for the Study of Organized Crime.
