When a funding source permits only a limited number of applications from a single institution and more than that number of investigators may be interested in submitting, the following occurs:
Distribution of the funding announcement with a clear statement that there is a limit to the number of applications that will be approved and a due date for submitting abstracts to the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP).
If more abstracts are received than permitted, the following occurs:
If from the same academic unit, the appropriate Dean is asked to select the applications to go forward.
If the abstracts come from different academic units, they are distributed to affected Deans to determine if a consensus may be reached on which applications to support.
If they cannot reach a consensus, the Assistant Vice President for Research makes the selection. If appropriate, the Vice President for Academic Affairs may be consulted.
