Statement about the Tragedy in Newtown, CT

Dec 18, 2012

The Marywood University community stands in prayerful solidarity with the people of Newtown, CT.

“…Jesus said to them, ‘Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the Kingdom of God belongs.’” - Mark 10:14

Dear Friends,

We are profoundly saddened by the recent heartbreaking events in Newtown, Connecticut. On behalf of the entire Marywood University Community, I wish to extend our love and sympathy and assure all affected by this tragedy of our ongoing prayers and support.

All children are precious gifts, and every life matters. If these lives matter to us, how much more do they matter to God? I am confident that these innocents, as well as the brave adults who perished, are now safe in the heart of God. While we cannot, unfortunately, change what has occurred, we can remain in prayerful solidarity with the grieving community of Newtown.

When something so unspeakable happens, we can be left wondering why, and we may also wonder where God is in the midst of this cavernous sorrow. This is a time to turn to Emmanuel, “God with us”, and to call to mind the powerful verse from Isaiah (9:6) reminding us of the many names of God:  “… And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

May the God who counsels and comforts, whose way is peace and whose light endures, hold the people of Newtown tenderly now and in the days to come.
