Sister Anne Munley, IHM, Ph.D., is Marywood's 11th president. She was elected President of Marywood University by the University Board of Trustees in January 2007 and began her presidential tenure on July 1, 2007, followed by an inaugural celebration on October 19, 2007.
Prior to her presidency, Sister Anne served as the Executive Director of the African Sisters Education Collaborative (ASEC). Sister Anne earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology, History, and Government from Marywood in 1966. She also holds a Master of Arts degree in Sociology from The Catholic University of America and a Ph.D. in Sociology from Boston College.
Sister Anne brings to the University a wealth of experience as an administrator, educator, and sociologist. The president's professional background includes a variety of global experiences, including service as the Director of Programs and Social Mission for the International Union of Superiors General, Rome, Italy, from 2003-2006. Sister Anne was President of the Congregation of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, from 1994 to 2002, and she also has served nationally and internationally as a consultant, presenter, and facilitator for numerous religious congregations.
She previously served Marywood as its Director of Planning and Institutional Research and Coordinator of Title III and as an Assistant Professor of Sociology. She has worked as Assistant Congregation Administrator and Director of Apostolic Planning for the IHM Congregation and has taught sociology at the high school level for various Catholic schools in Pennsylvania and New York.
A prolific writer, Sister Anne has authored and coauthored numerous books, articles, and pamphlets, including, most recently, a book titled, Understanding and Counteracting Trafficking in Persons: The Acts of the Seminar for Women Religious, which she co-authored with Stefano Volpicelli, Bernadette Sangma, Pino Gulia, and Roberto Rossi. The book has been published in English and Italian.
She has presented nationally and internationally on a range of topics, including spiritual leadership, the positive potential of globalization, and cross-cultural understanding as an expression of mission. She presently serves as board member for: The University of the Incarnate Word, San Antonio, Texas; the African Sisters Education Collaborative (ASEC), Scranton, Pennsylvania; Scranton Chamber of Commerce; the United Way of Lackawanna and Wayne Counties, the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania (AICUP), and the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities (ACCU).
Sister Anne has been an ex officio member of the boards of Marywood University and St. Joseph’s Center, Scranton Pennsylvania; Maxis Health System, Carbondale, Pennsylvania; and Our Lady of Grace Montessori School and Center, Manhasset, New York. Additionally, she has held several leadership roles in the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) Silver Spring, Maryland, including national service as LCWR president and membership on its executive committee and national board. She is past member of the St. Joseph’s Hospital Board and St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation Board, Carbondale, Pennsylvania, as well as the Board of Hospice of Pennsylvania, Inc., Scranton, Pennsylvania.
