User Support - Excel Workshops

Charts

Charts are graphic representations of data. A chart can communicate information much more effectively than a table full of numbers. This workshop will take the participant through each step to create different types of charts (Bar, Column, Pie, etc.) based on data contained in an Excel table. Modifying the structure, including its labels and colors, changing the related data, and printing will also be covered.

Excel Basics

This is a beginning workshop introducing the user to Microsoft Excel, a spreadsheet application. It is recommended before attending any of the other intermediate or advanced Excel sessions. It will give you a good working knowledge of the basics.

Formulas and Functions

Excel is a spreadsheet program used to organize, calculate, and analyze data. Once data has been entered in an organized manner, calculations can be performed by writing formulas and inserting functions. This workshop shows the user how to write (and copy) simple and more advanced formulas based on data in their spreadsheet in order to obtain a desired result. Built-in functions (such as statistical calculations like average, minimum, maximum, standard deviation) will also be utilized and demonstrated to the participant.

Grade Book

If you spend countless hours at the end of each semester calculating students' final grades, this workshop will surely help streamline the process and save you valuable time. Faculty will be taken through each step to set up their grade book using Excel. Tips for better organization of your quizzes, exams, papers and other materials will be shared along with the proper procedures for writing your formulas. Lastly, assigning letter grades to numerical grades using the LOOKUP function will also be demonstrated.

Protect Cells

Have you or a co-worker ever accidentally deleted an Excel formula (or formulas) that took a long time to create? Have you ever wished you could protect your formulas, or any other valuable information, from any accidental changes or deletions?  This workshop will walk you through the process of protecting those specific cells you need to remain “as is” on an Excel worksheet.

Sort and Filter

Excel is often used for calculations, but it can also be used as a database. In that case, data may need to be viewed in different ways.  It can be sorted ascending or descending by one or more columns.  Custom sorts can also be created.  Subtotals can be added.  You can also filter data in order to find and work with a subset of your data.

Tools and Tips

Sure you know the basics of Excel, but what else can it do? What problems have stumped you? Now is the time to explore other concepts that make Excel the wonderful tool that it is. For instance, are there times when you need to split a column in order to arrange the information for a mail merge? Ever need to calculate a running balance, repeat column headings on a second sheet when printing, keep those leading zeros in a zip code? This workshop will show you how you can make your spreadsheets even more efficient and easier to use.
