A Young but Determined Team

Among the athletic teams that began competing this past weekend is the University’s Volleyball team. The women’s volleyball team, which consists of nine women in their freshman and sophomore academic years, are determined to succeed academically and to also be named CSAC champions this year.

Under the leadership of Carissa Dube, head volleyball coach, the team aspires to lead both on and off the court. Gabriella Santos, captain of the volleyball team, said, “Although we are a young team, I think we have the potential and skills necessary to meet both our personal and team goals.”

One of the personal/team goals this year is for the volleyball athletes to earn a 3.8 overall grade point average. Team members are from a variety of disciplines, including: business, architecture, athletic training, exercise science, and biotechnology, to name a few. They also hail from different parts of the country and world, including: Pennsylvania, Florida, Maryland, Texas, California, and the Caribbean.

The volleyball teammates had the opportunity, prior to the academic year, to team build with each other during pre-season training. Peri Sheerin, sophomore volleyball team member, said, “We were able to do a lot of bonding in pre-season, including eating breakfast and dinner together, and, of course, practicing together.”

The team members have set high goals for themselves as a team and individually with their academics. “We have study halls to help everyone get on track with their courses. Everyone helps one another,” said Ms. Sheerin.

The University’s volleyball team began its season this past weekend competing at the Gettysburg Tournament. Although the team didn’t begin the season with wins, the athletes hope to turn that around this Thursday night with their first home game against Penn State Harrisburg, at 7 p.m., at the Center for Athletics and Wellness. Come out and support our volleyball team this Thursday and show your school spirit and Pacer Pride!
