Marywood to Tanzania

Marywood to Tanzania

This spring, four Marywood students will be traveling to Morogoro, Tanzania, to the Bigwa Secondary School, where they will tutor students in written and spoken English. To help offset traveling expenses—visas, medical insurance and passports—the Marywood students have been organizing a series of fundraising events since the fall semester.

Sister Margaret Gannon, IHM, Ph.D., professor and chair of social sciences department, has been helping to coordinate the trip with the African Sisters Education Collaboration (ASEC). She notes that Marywood students made two previous trips to the Bigwa Secondary School, helping with literacy efforts.

"The [Marywood] students receive training before they go in all aspects of Tanzania," Sister Margaret said. "We are happy to have the opportunity to help."

Organizing a "Run-Walk-Crawl," a donut sale and "Pennies for St. Patrick"—the latter a donation-based voting competition, in which the Marywood community can vote for their favorite staff or faculty member, the students have been hard-at-work, even volunteering their time to raise money by catering at Chartwells.

In the following podcast, listen to Sister Margaret discuss the Marywood students' fundraising efforts and Tanzania culture.

If you would like to make a donation, please contact Sister Margaret Gannon, IHM, Ph.D., at gannon@marywood.edu or (570) 348-6211 x2582.
