Fall Convocation Focuses on Empowerment

The Fall Convocation, the first formal academic ceremony of the 2012-2013 year at Marywood University, is set for Friday, October 19, at the Sette LaVerghetta Center, at 11 a.m. The University's core value of empowerment will be the focus of the day's events, which will feature Bernadette Gray-Little, Ph.D., Chancellor of the University of Kansas and a Marywood University alumna, as the keynote speaker.

When Dr. Gray-Little became KU's Chancellor in 2009, she made history as the first female and the first African American to lead the university. A highly-regarded scholar, teacher, and university leader, Dr. Gray-Little began her career as a professor of psychology at the University of North Carolina, where she rose to the post of UNC's chief academic officer after successive administrative appointments. While at UNC, she earned a reputation as a champion for the highest quality educational experience for students and a strong advocate for faculty and for research.

"She is indeed a dynamic figure, whose leadership qualities and remarkable spirit were fostered and developed on this campus," stated Sister Anne Munley, IHM, Marywood's President. "Dr. Gray-Little is an outstanding example of what you can do and how far you can go with a Marywood education and the confidence to realize your dreams."

In addition to the keynote address, the event will feature the annual faculty awards for distinguished academic work, including "Distinctions in One's Discipline" and Marywood University's nominee for "CASE Professor of the Year." Faculty award winners will be announced at the Fall Convocation by their respective deans.
