Marywood Recognized for Commitment to Service

Marywood University was recently named to the 2013 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). This is the fifth straight year that Marywood has received this distinction. Over five hundred higher education institutions were named to this year's Honor Roll. Combined, the Honor Roll awardees engaged 3.1 million students in community service for a total of 118 million service hours. That's 2.5 billion dollars in value to communities across the country.

This past year, Marywood students mentored children in an after school program at an area housing development, assisting them with homework and participating in games and activities. Other Marywood service efforts included: quilts for the homeless, a Thanksgiving adopt-a-family project, a Fair Trade sale, and a Christmas giving tree. The University also has an alternative spring break program that allows students to participate in national and international service trips.

The institutions that were named to the President's Honor Roll were cited for their achievements in general community service or in one of two special focus areas which align with the President's education and innovation priorities: the Promise Neighborhoods model and Early Childhood Education.

The President's Honor Roll is designed to encourage young people in higher education to engage in service activities.
