MFA Students Exhibit "Honey: Female Perspectives" and "[Dis]Place"

Marywood University's Art Galleries will present two student exhibitions, Honey: Female Perspectives and [Dis]Place, from April 2-30 in the Mahady Gallery, Shields Center for Visual Arts. The exhibits are the result of a competitive exhibition opportunity that was offered to all current Marywood Art Department undergraduate and graduate art students. Proposals were submitted at the end of 2010, reviewed, and selected by the Gallery Director and Curator for The Maslow Collection. The exhibitions aid and support the students' MFA degree research and documentation.

Honey: Female Perspectives features the collaborative and individual works of students in the MFA Sculpture program, Gina Rice, Noël Anderson-Corwin, and Sarah Schimeneck. Honey explores issues of body image, pressure to conform to gender stereotypes/roles, and rituals women develop as coping mechanisms. The multiple connotations of the term "honey" encompass the complex nature of the female existence and acceptance for the artists; loving, sweet, passive-aggressive, degrading. Honey is not a cry for help or a complaint, but rather, a celebration of the indestructible spirit living inside us all.

[Dis]Place is a site-specific multimedia installation by Kayla Cady, MFA painting student, that addresses the social and environmental fallout of the coal mining industry in Northeastern Pennsylvania. The exhibition involves video projection on paintings installed on various surfaces in the stairwell, as well as those who use the stairwell travelling from one floor to another.

The Gallery Talk by the four artists will be held on April 13 at 3 p.m. in the Suraci Gallery, Shields Center for Visual Arts. It will be moderated by Robert Schweitzer, Curator for The Maslow Collection. The exhibitions and gallery talk are free and open to the public.

Gallery hours are Monday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m., Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m.-8p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 1-4 p.m. For further information or directions, contact Marywood University Art Galleries at (570) 348-6211, ext. 2428, or visit www.marywood.edu/galleries.
