Director of Athletics and Recreation Named to NCAA Division III Management Council

Marywood University's Director of Athletics and Recreation, Dr. Mary Jo Gunning was recently named to the NCAA Division III Management Council for her second term on the committee. Having previously served on the Council from 1995-1999, Gunning is one of 19 members representing Division III institutions throughout the nation on the committee that helps implement and oversee Division III athletics.

Among the duties of the Management Council is implementing policies adopted by the Presidents Council and Executive Committee, recommending legislative proposals for sponsorship by the Presidents Council, and making interpretations of Division III bylaws. The Council also adopts non-controversial administrative bylaws and regulations and reviews appeals by member institutions of decisions made within the NCAA governance structure.

The Division III Management Council is comprised of Chief Executive Officers, faculty athletics representatives, athletic directors, senior women's administrators, conference representatives and student-athletes representing each Division III geographical region. The group meets quarterly including meetings at the NCAA Convention in January and at the National Office in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Currently in her 19th year as Marywood's Director of Athletics and Recreation, Dr. Gunning has overseen the expansion and emergence of the University's intercollegiate athletic and recreation programs. Since joining the Colonial States Athletic Conference, formerly known as the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference in 1992, Marywood teams have captured 22 championships and earned 16 runner-up finishes.

A 1979 graduate of Marywood, Dr. Gunning went on to obtain her M.A. in Exercise Physiology and Sports Medicine from the University of Maryland in 1981. In 1991, Dr. Gunning completed her Ed.D. in Sports Administration at Temple University prior to returning to her undergraduate alma mater as an athletic administrator.
