Welcome to the Department of Mathematics at Marywood University. If you wish to acquire a deep understanding of the power, beauty, and impact of mathematics on our society and our understanding of nature, then this is the major for you. At Marywood, you'll find an inspiring environment for the study of mathematics: small classes, close relationships with faculty and other students (see our math club website), opportunities for independent research, and the latest in computer facilities and software. You will learn to apply mathematics in evaluating and solving classical and contemporary problems, to understand the use of logic in the proof of mathematical and scientific statements, and to use the computer as a tool. The analytical skills and the habit of independent rational thinking developed in our department at Marywood can serve you well in any number of possible careers - from business to research to teaching. Currently, a shortage of matheamticians exists both in industry and in the teaching profession at every level. Therefore, the job market is extremely good. Our graduates either continue their studies in graduate school or find a challenging job in their major within weeks of their graduation. Recent graduates have secured lucrative jobs in actuarial science, code encryption, computer design, systems engineering, and securities analysis. Please view our site Job Opportunities for more information. The department offers two Bachelors of Science degrees: the B.S. in Mathematics and the B.S. in Mathematics/Secondary Education. Each program is designed to provide a strong foundation in mathematical skills and logical reasoning, an appreciation of the role of mathematics in other disciplines, and the mathematical maturity necessary for graduate studies. We also offer a minor in mathematics and a minor in computer science. For more information, contact:
