American Regions Math League Team from Northeast Pennsylvania

The American Regions Math League (ARML) has been holding competitions annually since 1976 for the purpose of providing a national competition for the best mathematics students in the nation's high schools. It has grown from just a few east coast teams to over 100 teams from all over the country competing at three sites - Penn State University at State College, the University of Iowa, and California State University at San Jose. Simply put, it is the World Series of mathematics competitions. Teams are composed of 15 students each and are generally organized from large regions, but some cities (e.g. New York, Chicago, San Francisco) send their own teams. In the past, Canada, Russia, Taiwan, and China have also been represented. The ARML competition has now become not only a very prestigious annual event, but also a social experience where some of our nation's most talented youth meet, exchange ideas, and form new friendships. It should also be said that membership on an ARML team can be a very significant addition to a college application. The contest is usually held on the first Saturday in June. You can visit the ARML website at: http://www.arml.com

Each year for the last ten years, Dr. Craig M. Johnson, professor of mathematics at Marywood University, has coached a team of students from Northeast Pennsylvania and taken them to the contest at Penn State, State College. Past teams are pictured below. If you know of a talented high school student in NEPA who enjoys the thrill of mathematics and would be interested in being a member of next year's team, contact Craig Johnson at his office, 570-348-6291, or e-mail him at johnsonc@marywood.edu.
