Marywood Establishes Office of Military and Veteran Services
More veterans of the armed forces are trading in their uniforms for school books, as they transition from military to student life. To accommodate this growing population, Marywood University has established an Office of Military and Veteran Services.
"We are going to make sure that these students get the services and resources they need to make a successful transition," says Lauren Williams, Director of the Office of Military and Veteran Services. "Enrollment of veterans at Marywood has doubled in the past year, and it is going to continue to increase."
The Office of Military and Veteran Services will help student veterans navigate through paperwork, provide confidential counseling services, and coordinate information sessions, all with the aim of making the transition easier from military to student life.
The Office recently hosted an event on campus, "Beyond GI Joe: The Contemporary College Student Veteran," the first cohesive effort of its kind that focused on educating regional professionals on best practices when working with military and veteran student populations.
Ms. Williams emphasized, "Students' military culture often stays with them long after they separate from service. With the recent and predicted significant influx of student veterans into higher education and the workforce following the events of 9/11, it is important for both current and future student affairs professionals, current graduate and undergraduate student leaders, and others interested in working with our military and veteran population in the community to have an understanding of military culture."
"Beyond GI Joe: The Contemporary College Student Veteran," hosted by the Office of Military and Veteran Services at Marywood University from August 6-8, 2012, offered an intensive and interactive educational experience. The program deepened participants' understanding of today’s student veteran, in an effort to better serve this growing student population.
