Michael J. Hanley (M.P.A. ’95)
2015 Award of Excellence in Health and Human Services
Michael Hanley has long been committed to making life better for the people in his hometown of Scranton. As Chief Executive Officer of United Neighborhood Centers of Northeastern Pennsylvania (UNC), a multi-service agency, he oversees a network of community, childcare, and senior centers, and community services programs. In addition, he now serves as Chief Executive Officer of the United Neighborhood Community Development Corporation, a newly formed subsidiary of UNC, with a mission of developing affordable rental housing for low income households, while addressing the comprehensive community development needs of struggling neighborhoods.
Michael earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Scranton before adding an M.P.A. from Marywood. He is also a graduate of the Community Change Agents Project at the Center for Community Change and of the Achieving Excellence in Community Development Program with Neighborworks of America at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School.
He is still and always a hometown boy, who, along with his wife, Susan, is raising his family, including son, Sean, and daughter, Katie, in the city he loves. The Marywood Alumni Association is delighted to recognize Michael Hanley—our own hometown hero—with the Award of Excellence in Health and Human Services in this, the University’s Centennial Year of 2015.
