Marywood University is committed to the humane use of animals in research and teaching. The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is responsible to assure that the institution's animal program, procedures and facilities adhere to all applicable laws, regulations and policies governing the use of animals in research.
In an effort to ensure best practices and humane care of all animals used in research and teaching, Marywood University’s IACUC follows the committee guidance provided in the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (NRC 2011), specifically for overall animal program management, animal welfare, ethics, training, and occupational health and safety for personnel. The Marywood University IACUC oversees the welfare of all animals used in teaching, testing, and research projects, including invertebrates and those not explicitly covered by the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) or the Public Health Service (PHS) Policy.
The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (NRC 2011) states:
“The goal of the Guide is to promote humane care and use for laboratory animals by providing information that will enhance animal well-being, the quality of research, and the advancement of scientific knowledge that is relevant to both humans and animals. It is acknowledged that the use of different species in research is expanding, and that researchers and institutions will face new and unique challenges in determining how to apply the Guide in these situations. In making these determinations, it is important to keep in mind that the Guide is intended to provide information to assist researchers, IACUCs, veterinarians, and other stakeholders in assuring the implementation of effective and appropriate animal care and use programs that are based on humane care.”
Faculty and researchers intending to use animal subjects (non vertebrate) in research or teaching on campus or at another site must submit an application to Marywood University IACUC electronically for approval. Animal research cannot begin without approval of the IACUC. Marywood IACUC meets biannually.
