What is the proper way of unplugging a flash drive?

1. When you plug a flash drive into your PC's USB port, you will get a new icon in the system tray (bottom right hand corner of the screen) with a green arrow. That is the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon. Locate it.
2. Click on the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon.
3. A message box will display above the system tray. It will read "Safely remove USB mass storage device." 
4. Click on the message.
5. You will then see a bubble message which will read "Safe to remove hardware."
6. You can now unplug the flash drive.
