Academic Affairs Middle States Accreditation Support Assistant Dr. Kathleen Ruthkosky (half-time)
Graduate assistant with an interest in higher education administration and strong collaboration skills is needed to work on preparation of materials for a major accreditation report. The individual must be organized and have the ability to collaborate and support the work of faculty and professional personnel as they prepare report documentation. Experience with data analysis and a graduate student in the Higher Education Administration Program is preferred.
Administrative Studies-Dr. McDonnell (half-time)
The graduate assistant will participate in gerontological research projects with a goal of publishing in a journal or having presentations accepted for national conference presentations. The graduate assistant will have marketing and administrative duties such as coordinating regional conferences, grant writing, and building relationships between the academic program and various governmental and non-profit entities. The presence of the graduate assistant will particpate in academic enhancements to the program by supporting the development of academic course content, thesis seminar, and the program self-study. The graduate assistant will have a major from within the program.
Admissions-Ms. Deidre Jones (full-time)
The graduate assistant for University Admissions will provide support for marketing, communications, and processes necessary to conduct special events on campus for prospective undergraduate and graduate students and their families. The graduate assistant will facilitate the management of the large amount of correspondence and information that enters University Admissions through the use of computers. Lastly, the graduate assistant will communicate with prospective undergraduate and graduate students by phone, email, and internet to answer questions and secure information. Coordination between University Admissions and other University departments to complete major projects will be essential. A graduate student from Communications, Higher Education Administration, or School Counseling would be preferred.
Architecture-Digital Fabrication Mr. Joseph Gluba (full-time)
This position is a Full-Time Graduate Assistantship to undertake advanced design exploration utilizing the digital fabrication equipment in School of Architecture that currently consists of: a computer-numerically-controlled router; a three-dimensional printer, and a laser cutter. This GA will also manage student use of, and training on, this digital fabrication equipment. Candidates will submit a portfolio containing examples of computer skills and demonstrated craft utilizing digital fabrication. Experience with computer modeling and digital fabrication equipment is required. Candidates must submit a one-page proposal for an independent digital fabrication design exploration project. Architecture-Digital Media Mr. James Eckler (full-time)
The School of Architecture (SoA) is seeking a Full-Time Graduate Assistant for our Digital Media sequence, a three-semester sequence focusing on computer applications in design and fabrication. The selected GA will assist students, faculty, and administrators with various digital design applications and the operation and oversight of digital output equipment. This position will provide the GA with opportunities to explore the potentials of our computer software through research focusing on self-directed experimentation. In addition, this important position will be of great assistance to students seeking additional knowledge of software potentials for the architectural profession. Architecture Interior-Ms. Maria MacDonald (full-time)
This position is a Full-Time Graduate Assistantship to provide administrative assistance and materials research and collection related to the development of a new Materials Resource Center in the School of Architecture. Because the Interior Architecture Program focuses on the impact of materials on interior environments, this Center will be a major teaching/learning resource for our students and faculty. In addition, this new program initiative will be an important part of our forthcoming CIDA Accreditation visit (most likely in late 2014). School of Architecture graduate students only.
Art Galleries-Ms. Sandra Povse (half-time) 2 positions
The Graduate Assistant provides support and assistance to Art Galleries operations including: all exhibition installations; facility maintenance; update and expansion of electronic calendar listings, web page, and social media; assistance with publishing activities and press releases; Permanent Collection research, records, maintenance, storage, and display; help with management of work study students; support to The Maslow Collection; exhibition planning and gallery administration; educational outreach and interpretation activities; receptions, lectures, and special events. While the assistantship is challenging, it offers the opportunity to be part of a team in which the GA's aesthetic decisions and strengths are utilized and reflected in gallery installations and operations. Prior gallery experience a plus but not required; MFA students preferred but not essential.
Art Therapy Dr. Barbara Parker-Bell (full-time)
The graduate assistant for the graduate art therapy program will provide support for a variety of international, and regional educational programs that engage art therapy students, alumni, the campus, community, and regional professionals. In addition, the graduate assistant will support faculty research and presentations, assist in managing art therapy spaces and exhibit areas, help develop and maintain communication and with area service agencies, and support art therapy recruitment efforts and Art Department web-site presence. Candidates for the position must have strong organizational and communication skills (verbal and written). Graduate art therapy majors preferred.
Athletics-Dr. Gunning (half-time)
Athletic and Recreation Department Graduate Assistantship – Responsibilities will be tailored to the individual’s experience and skills in the realm of athletics, recreation, wellness, and fitness. The successful applicant will have a bachelor’s degree and experience in a specialty area, i.e. coaching, sports nutrition, and or recreation/fitness program development; strong interpersonal, planning and organizational abilities; excellent oral and written communications skills and competence with technology resources are essential.
Business Department-Dr. Art Comstock (full-time)
The responsibilities of the graduate assistant will include: financial research and administrative support for the Pacer Investment Fund; assisting the faculty mentor, Dr. Art Comstock, and other Business faculty members with data collection, research, and grant possibilities; and providing additional organizational assistance for the operations of the Business Programs. Campus Ministries-Sr. Luxner (full-time)
The Office of Service-Learning and Community Service, located within Campus Ministry, seeks a full-time graduate assistant to support the administrative work of researching, planning, communicating, and facilitating all details related to the Alternative Break Service Trip Program. This position requires a commitment to the mission and core values of Marywood, an interest in community service, organizational skills, attention to details, skill in collaboration and teamwork and strong oral and written communication skills.
Communication Sciences and Disorders-K. Medeiros (half-time)
A part-time assistantship is available in the department of communication sciences and disorders. Applicants who have a strong background in early childhood, special education, psychology or speech-langauge pathology are encouraged to apply. The position is primarily research-oriented. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the PI’s research as well as develop their own small-scale project under the advisement of the PI. The successful candidate will have strong writing, organization, and interpersonal skills.
Communication Sciences and Disorders-Ms. Andrea Novak (half-time)
Part-time administrative graduate assistant is being requested for the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders/Marywood University Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic for the 2013-2014 academic year. The graduate assistant will support the Clinic Director, Graduate Program Director, and Chairperson. Activities will include assisting with the day-to-day operations of the department and clinic, coordination of community-based outreach services and off campus internship placements, and in the development/gathering of documentation that supports ASHA accreditation status.
Counseling Center-Dr. Shaw (full-time)
The position is appropriate for a graduate student in Psychology/Counseling, Education, Social Work, or Art Therapy. The graduate assistant’s principal responsibilities would be to serve as the coordinator/counselor of the CSDC Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) education and programming and as co-advisor to the peer education program, “Peers on Wellness” (POW!).
Education Department-Drs. Arter/Fryer/Gonazalez (full-time)
Graduate assistant needed for a variety of tasks including working with a campus based transition program for students with autism; research data collection, entry, and analysis; and instructional technology training. Experience with individuals with autism and instructional technologies (Kurzweil, Inspiration, Smart Board, Moodle etc.) is helpful but not necessary.
Individual must be organized and able to multi-task. Ability to interact and collaborate with a variety of stakeholders including faculty, community members and students (including those with disabilities) is a must. Candidates with experience and interest in instructional technologies and education are preferred. Excellent writing, leadership, communication, and organization skills are needed.
Fulbright Program-Dr. Joseph Polizzi (half-time)
Organized and computer literate, social media savvy graduate assistant with excellent writing skills sought to aid the Fulbight Program Advisor with the administration of the campus Fulbright program and support the Education Department in Advancement and Public Relations activities. The graduate assistant responsibilities include helping to improve and maintain the campus presence of the Fulbright program, supporting students in their application process and creating, organizing, writing and distributing an education department newsletter for students, alumni and area school districts and constituents.
Skills and activities include: Maintaining webpage/site to support Fulbright program, organizing student applications, coordinating campus committee meetings, interfacing with students/faculty/admin, providing assistance with student writing, aiding in the Organization of informational events for students, faculty and administration, and use of social media and publishing software.
Human Performance Laboratory-Ms. Kathy Uhranowsky (half-time)
The graduate assistant will be active in the further establishment of the Marywood Human Performance Laboratory (HPL) as a high-level exercise testing, educational, and research facility. Library-Ms. Julie Watson (half-time)
The Marywood Library graduate assistant provides research assistance at the Library’s Ask Here desk, addressing the diverse information needs of the Library’s users and selecting information products and services that best serve the individual user. The graduate assistant supports the library faculty in their scholarship endeavors, developing and enhancing interactive online research guides, contributing content to the Library’s blog and newsletter, and supporting the librarians’ various quantitative and qualitative research projects. The graduate assistant uses Twitter and Facebook to promote various library services and activities. S/he assists in preparing for the Library’s move into the new Learning Commons building in 2014. Upon completion of the assistantship, the student will have understanding of issues and techniques related to the creation, organization, management, access, and use of knowledge and information and will be able to apply this understanding to philosophical and practical problems across disciplines.
Marketing Department-Ms. Carrie Toomey (full-time)
This graduate assistantship supports an ideal out-of-classroom learning experience for a Masters degree student in Graphic Design or a closely-related field. This opportunity will provide practical, real-world experience in the business of graphic design right here on the Marywood University campus. The student should have excellent creative and organizational skills; experience in graphic design computer programs, including Quark, Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign; the willingness to work in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment (similar to that of an ad agency); the ability to apply graphic arts theory in a collaborative way to a daily working agency environment; the ability to interact with and provide graphic design guidance to “clients” of the department (typically, representatives of Marywood academic and administrative departments); a commitment to high standards in graphic design; and a willingness to work in a team environment, to learn and to share knowledge. The ideal candidate will also possess good photography skills, in both executing photos and applying them to design. The end-products in this department are primarily printed materials, but there are also web-based outcomes involved; and all work performed by the graduate assistant would be accomplished on a computer or by using photographic equipment.
Nutrition Department-Dr. Harrison (half-time)
The major duty of the graduate assistant will be to support research, grant writing, data collection and analysis, and manuscript development. Further, the graduate assistant will work with three program directors on accreditation processes within the department by evaluating the current effectiveness of quality assurance. Lastly, the graduate assistant will assist the Nutrition Department in the recruitment of undergraduate and graduate students through marketing activities. A graduate student from the Nutrition Department is a job requirement.
Performing Arts-Ms. Barbara Blackledge (half-time)
The Public Events Coordinator for Marywood Performing Arts Assistantship will require a person with effective management and communication skills towards coordinating the public relations with the Marywood Marketing staff for 40-50 major public performing arts events and the box office for 11-13 major performances over the course of the entire academic year. An interest in fine arts and/or education is preferred.
Physician Assistant Program-Dr. Lori Swanchak (half-time)
The Physician Assistant Graduate Assistant will be responsible for independently collecting and evaluating data from over a three year span. Data includes: demographics of applicants, GPA’s, GRE’s, PACKRAT I and II, Mock Board and PANCE Results. The Graduate Assistant will analyze data essential for successful program accreditation. Once collected and evaluated the Graduate Assistant will meet with staff to report data findings. In addition, the Graduate Assistant will develop a successful federal grant application and conduct appropriate surveillance of successful federal grant. A graduate student with a major in higher education administration or administrative studies is preferred.
Planning and Institutional Research-Dr. Ellen Boylan (full-time)
The Graduate Assistant position in the Office of Planning and Institutional Research engages the student in a host of critical research skills. The position supports several key administrative and research activities that serve University operations and promote academic excellence. In particular, the Graduate Assistant supports the Student Evaluation of Teaching process carried out by this office on behalf of the Office of Academic Affairs. Also, the Graduate Assistant carries out administrative tasks and conducts research that informs decision-making and goal-setting in higher education at the executive level.
The Graduate Assistant performs as a research assistant who supports survey research and data sharing and reporting projects conducted by the Office of Planning and Institutional Research. Key components of the assignment are assisting the administration and processing of Student Evaluations of Teaching for the fall 2013 and spring 2014 semesters; supporting the analysis and reporting of results of student survey research, in particular the HERI Freshman and Senior Surveys and the AICUP First Year Student Survey; processing the NSSE and FSSE data and creating the MPI Reports; and providing organizational and research support for Marywood University related to regional and national research projects conducted in conjunction with the, (1) Catholic Higher Education Research Cooperative (CHERC), (2) Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities (ACCU) and, (3) annual research of the NSSE Catholic College and Independent College consortia.
Psychology and Counseling Department-Dr. Jennifer Barna (half-time)
The student should have a strong interest in professional counseling, particularly school counseling. He or she should have research interests related to school counseling programs and academic achievement, student personal-social development, school counselor role, advocacy and accountability, and service learning as a teaching pedagogy. Additionally, the student should be organized, timely, and able to work independently. Strong writing and/or editing skills are preferred. The student should expect to engage in a collaborative learning and supervision experience, and be prepared to share ideas and ask questions. A major component of this assistantship will be working with other graduate students to improve their overall experience within the program. Finally, the student should be familiar with Moodle, Word, and Power Point. Experience with Survey Monkey and basic website design would be helpful, but is not required.
Psychology and Counseling Department-Dr. Janet Muse-Burke (half-time)
The graduate assistantship position research will be focused on: career counseling process and outcome, spirituality, supervision/training, research mentoring, and scale construction. The student should be familiar with Excel, Word, Power Point, and SPSS and have strong writing skills, show attention to detail, and effectively manage diverse responsibilities. Specific tasks for the graduate assistantship will include: literature searches, data entry, data collection, data analysis, presentation and manuscript editing, reference checking, presentation and manuscript writing, and writing service articles for a local newsletter.
Psychology and Counseling Department-Dr. E. Campenni (half-time)
Psychology professor seeks graduate student to assist in conducting research which investigates the quality and quantity of daily experiences of mindfulness and effective methods for cultivating mindfulness in the general population. The graduate assistant will work closely with the faculty member to review the current literature relevant to mindfulness, gather quantitative and qualitative data, conduct both qualitative and quantitative analysis of data and assist in the development and presentation of conference and manuscript submissions for publication.
Psychology and Counseling Department-Dr. Dana Leighton (half-time)
Graduate Assistant position in the Peace and Justice Psychology laboratory under the supervision of Dana C. Leighton, Ph.D. The lab investigates the social psychology of intergroup conflict, fairness, and trust. This position may involve research in psychology literature, designing and conducting psychology experiments, managing the operations of the research lab, collecting and analyzing data, scholarly writing, and presenting data at conferences. Skills required are the ability to locate, read, and analyze psychology literature, conduct experimental sessions, understand and perform inferential statistical analysis (e.g., ANOVA, multiple regression), and write academically in APA style. The Graduate Assistant should also be conscientious, organized, be able to work independently, work well collaboratively with senior and junior colleagues, have experience with word processing, spreadsheet, and statistics software, and have good oral and written communication skills.
Psychology and Counseling Department-Dr. Edward O'Brien (half-time)
Position involves support of faculty research in areas of self-esteem, traumatic stress, and technological innovation in clinical practice (e.g., telemedicine). Involvement in supporting course activities related to class laboratory activities (assessment and intervention pre-practicum training for graduate students, empirical applications of psychology for undergraduate students). May involve some support for administrative work such as involvement in ongoing project for evaluating learning outcomes in undergraduate psychology, development of practicum and internship options for undergraduates and master’s degree program in psychology.
Psychology and Counseling Department-Dr. David Palmiter (half-time)
This assistantship would assist the professor in scholarly projects. These are anticipated to include: publish and/or market a book on teaching graduate students how to do cognitive behavioral therapy with children and adolescents, publish an article on a developmental model of supervision, and publish an article on the concept of Positive Multiculturalism. The assistant may also help Dr. Palmiter prepare for professional presentations on a variety of topics within clinical psychology.
Psychology and Counseling Department-Dr. Tracie Pasold (half-time)
This research assistantship opportunity promises to be robust as it involves collaboration with a faculty member who is new to Marywood and is in the very exciting process of building a strong and comprehensive research program. The GA would be instrumental in the continued development and growth of the expansive goals of my research program. The opportunity to glean crucial skills through involvement in the breadth and depth of activities of this assistantship will empower the individual to achieve to his/her potential in whatever professional and personal goals he/she pursues. Specifically, the GA will have the excellent opportunity to be involved in the research process from the beginning stages of development of a research project through to the end stages of presentation/publication efforts. The assistantship relationship will be viewed as a collegial collaboration in which the GA will have the opportunity to inform the research program through the sharing of creative ideas. Much of the research work will relate to the topic of pediatric eating disorders; however, other topics related to children and pediatric psychology are also of interest as targets of the research program. This assistantship experience extends beyond research and into the realms of community outreach and prevention efforts. Research and Sponsored Programs Office Dr. Maria Edwards (full-time)
The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs seeks a graduate assistant to provide support for research compliance. Responsibilities include performing administrative review of IRB and ERC applications, verifying researchers’ completion of the required ethics training courses, following the status of reports and expiring studies, providing support for IACUC meetings, and assisting in the planning and presentation of training. The graduate assistant student should have strong writing, editing, and communication skills. Training will be provided specific to use of databases and other Internet-based management tools such as IRBNet. Students will be required to complete Responsible Conduct in Research and IRB training through CITI. The student should be able to be present in the office for most of the assigned hours.
School Psychology Program-Dr. F. DeMatteo (full-time)
The graduate assistant’s primary responsibility is to support the school psychology program’s development, recruitment, and maintenance. As such, the graduate assistant will gain knowledge and experience directly related to program development, implementation, and outcome. These skills are essential to human service related employment positions requiring leadership, innovation, accountability, and compliance with standards.
The graduate assistant’s secondary responsibility is to participate in the preparation of scholarly writings and presentations at the local, state, and national levels. These publications and presentations often stem from collaborative efforts with the education department and SOAR Program.
The graduate assistant’s third responsibility is to support my involvement with campus-wide assessment, as applied to Middle States and NCATE accreditations. My graduate assistants collected data and created assessment schedules with me in 2010-2011 during our preparation of the Middle States- Periodic Review and Report Self Study. Future graduate assistants will support my role as Co-Chair of the NCATE Standards Committee for the Reap College of Education and Human Development.

Science-Dr. Lisa Antonacci (full-time)
Applicants applying for a graduate assistantship position working under the supervision of Dr. Lisa Antoniacci should have a Bachelor’s degree in Science (Biology, Chemistry, Biotechnology). The applicant should be a student pursuing a Masters in Biotechnology. Previous experience as a lab assistant, research student, or held a position in the biotech industry is preferred. The research involves several facets of chromatin activity and the regulation of this activity at the nuclear envelope in yeast. The graduate assistant will be expected to 1). Use the current literature to sustain the research project, 2). Maintain a detailed lab notebook, 3). Optimize and troubleshoot research protocols, 4). Work independently in a lab setting, and 5). Graduate Assistantship opening for a person seeking to explore the field of biochemical toxicology/biochemical evolution to understand the consequences of ocean acidification resulting from a variety of sources including greenhouse gases responsible for global warming. Candidates for the position should have a minimum of wet lab experience associated with undergraduate courses and have successfully completed one or more of the following, Biochemistry, Molecular and Cell Biology, Environmental Chemistry, Genetics or equivalent courses. Students with undergrad research experience or who have completed internships in science are preferred.
Social Work Lehigh Valley Campus-Dr. Black/Dr. Gigler (half-time)
Candidates are invited to submit applications to serve as a Graduate Assistant (GA) in the School of Social Work and Administrative Studies, Lehigh Valley Program on the campus of DeSales University. Applicants must be current enrollees or matriculants in the School of Social Work and Administrative Studies with sufficient time to dedicate to the position. This graduate research assistantship involves conducting research on issues related to HIV prevention, sex work, trafficking, race, class, gender and sexuality under the guidance and mentorship of the faculty. Outstanding work may lead to opportunities to co-author articles for publications and presentations at prestigious venues/conferences. A strong interest in academic research is essential.
Student Activities Department (full-time)
The graduate assistant will serve as the primary resource to all of the student clubs and organizations. This will include coordinating monthly Council of Club Meetings, the Leadership Conference Training Program, and the Advisors Training Session.
The graduate assistant will help the Student Activities Crew and the Undergraduate Student Government Association in assessing student needs, planning and evaluating activities; assist with the implementation of Family Weekend; aid the SAC interns in planning Homecoming; and coordinate the Student Activities Fairs each semester.
The graduate assistant will be responsible for the creation and publication of the Weekly Squirrel, a weekly online newsletter that advertises programs for the week that are sponsored by SALD as well as other Student Life Departments.
Web Development Office-Sr. K. Burns (half-time)
The graduate assistant assigned to the Web Development Office will be assigned to design, edit and otherwise maintain documents on the Marywood University website; assist in the development of the website and portals; develop multimedia components for use on the website; maintain databases and other files that are used to provide content or to help maintain the website; research, plan and execute projects for the website (e.g., a photo/multimedia essay highlighting the offerings, resources and facilities of an academic department); and provide training and support to departmental web editors. Particular assignments will be designed commensurate with the knowledge, skills and interests of the student. Training will be provided by Web Development and other OIT staff members.
This graduate assistant will learn a great deal about planning and maintaining a website. In addition to becoming familiar with the technical aspects, the student will be exposed to issues such as design, accessibility, need for collaboration, fitting the work into the mission of the institution. The skills and concepts learned in connection with his/her work on our website will be applicable in a broad range of professional, social and personal contexts. The experience will enhance the student's value to potential employers.
