An Installation Exploring Relationships Between People
The Space Between Us Is Not Distance explores relationships between people by creating a spatial model of a relationship between two bodies. It creates a place for viewers to examine the space defined by two people, a space created by their closeness. In reality this space is built by their shared experiences, their exchanges, and their attempts to know the other. It is constantly changing and developing; it is active. The space between people is a place for them to live.
The installation compares physical sensations of distance, closeness, and separateness. These are analogous to the emotional sensations people might feel between one another. Decontextualizing them as physical experience gives the viewer the time and opportunity to make sense of them in a new way. It allows them new insight into their own relationships and a new way to understand the activities that build the spaces of their relationships.
