BARBARA REMINGTON: A Forty-two Foot Trip to Mexico & Other Sketchbook Adventures
Suraci GalleryMar 23, 2013 - May 04, 2013
Artist Barbara Remington, well known for her J. R. R. Tolkien cover–art illustrations for The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings trilogy, lets us explore and enjoy her fascinating journals and sketchbooks of everyday life and journeys, offering the viewer a delightful perspective on the artist's vision. Additionally, the exhibition reinforces the value of keeping a sketchbook and journaling, compilations of thoughts and places that can be seeds for future ideas.
Remington, who now lives in Thompson, PA, was originally from Minnesota before moving to New York City early on in her career to study and work. With more experiences than can be recounted, she worked as an illustrator, had jobs with several small newspapers, ushered at Carnegie Hall, worked at Doubleday Bookstore and Manhattan Marine, among many others. She ran the Boggle Shop formerly located on East 17th Street in Manhattan, an inventive store that was filled with highly innovative, imaginative, and humorous accessories in the 1970s. She has also illustrated a number of children’s books including: The Christmas Mouse, Really Not Really, The Billy Goat Gruff, The Three Bears and Goldilocks, The Scarlett Thread, Boat, and Scuttle the Stowaway Mouse.
We are delighted to have Barbara Remington finally in our gallery! The sketchbooks, illustrations, journals, and ephemera in the gallery document her illustrious career and equally illustrious adventures!
Artist's Reception: March 23, 6–8 PM
