Majors and Minors

The English Department offers degree programs in English Literature and English/Secondary Education. In addition to these primary programs, the department offers several minors.

Enrolled in a department with a student/faculty ratio of 8:1, English majors receive a lot of personal attention and guidance. For example, students often work closely with faculty members on individual research projects, and faculty members frequently assist majors with co-curricular activities such as Bayleaf and the Book Swap. To underscore its commitment to undergraduates, the English Department limits literature classes to 25 students, though some specialized courses are capped at 15. Introductory writing courses are capped at 20; upper-level writing courses enroll no more than 15.

Our internship program places majors in many kinds of work environments. Taking on roles as writers and editors, interns often help in the publication of community newsletters and magazines. English majors have recently worked at the Lackawanna Historical Society, Happenings Magazine, and Marywood's University Relations Office.

Several scholarships and awards are available to majors.
