A native of Charleston, West Virginia, Lloyd Hildebrand graduated from Glassboro State College (now Rowan University) in 1968, with a bachelor of arts degree. In 1973, he earned his master's degree from James Madison University. He is author and editor of numerous books.

An ordained minister, he has taught in public schools in New Jersey and Virginia and also at Mary Baldwin College. Currently, he teaches Children's Literature and Structure of Linguistics at Marywood, where he has taught since 1989.
