 COURSE SYLLABUS

Grading Policies:
There will be two exams, six quizzes and four participation grades assigned in this course. The following outlines the percentages assigned to each and briefly describes what each involves.

Two Exams: 70%
30% Exam #1:The Merchant of Venice, Richard III & King Lear
40% Exam #2: Othello, Macbeth & The Tempest

For the first exam, you will be asked to prepare two questions ahead of time at home and to write about one of them in class. Only one will appear on the actual exam; but because you will not know which one of the two I will choose for the exam, you will have to prepare both of them. For the second (final) exam, you will be asked to prepare two of three questions ahead of time at home and to write ont he two you choose in class at out designated exam time during finals week.

Six Quizzes: 10%
The Merchant of Venice
Richard III
King Lear
Othello
Macbeth
The Tempest

Quizzes will focus on the texts' literal lever; they will not be interpretive. They will ask simple questions that require only short answers about the characters and events of the texts. (For example: What happens to Glouster at the end of the play?)

Class Participation: 20%
At the end of every four or five weeks, you will receive a letter grade reflecting the quality of your participation in class for that period. Each of your participation grades will be worth 5% of the overall grade.

Approximate Dates for Exams:
Exam #1: October 30
Final Exam: December 11 (Final date to be assigned by registrar)

Days Off From Class:
October 14: Fall Brake
November 27: Thanksgiving
